Library Commission
October 25, 1989
A meeting of the Library Commission was held Wednesday
evening, October 25, 1989. Following is a summary of the
action taken.
I. Roll Call
Commissioners present: Dyer, Mills, Moloney,
Moore, Peacock, Wood
Commissioners absent: Newby (excused)
II. Report on Posting of Commission Agenda
The agenda was posted on October 20, 1989.
III. _Apvroval of Minutes
The September 27, 1989, minutes were approved as
written.
IV. Old Business
A. Roy Swanson, Parks & Buildings Superintendent
- update on Library Landsscaping
Roy Swanson was unable to attend this meeting
and will be invited to attend the December 13
meeting.
B. Attendance of Commissioners at City Council
Meetings
After further discussion on the reasons for
this policy, the consensus of the Commission
was that members would try to attend one
Council meeting per month on a rotating
basis. The schedule is:
November - Newby
December - Peacock
January - Dyer
February - Moloney
March - Moore
C. Wish List - Suggestions from Commissioners
Chair Barbara Wood expressed her wish for a
drive-up book drop, and also some way to make
the existing book drop less noisy. Staff
will investigate ways to do this.

Jane Vaughan, President of Friends of the
Library, Mary Jeanne Fenn, Book-Go-Round
Manager, and Pat Mahler, Merchandising
Chair, were introduced. Each spoke on an
aspect of the history, current operations,
and future plans for the used book shop.
Pat Mahler said the Friends intended to let
the City Council know that they would like
to take over the other half of the space at
the current site if it should become
available. They also talked about the dis-
play which will be in the Library on 54
Saratoga authors.

Dolly Barnes announced that the library will
probably open the reference and children's area
November 6, and gradually replace the adult
books. She described the efforts of staff and
volunteers in the clean up. She also distributed
a list of gifts the library received from the
Friends in fiscal year 88-89, which totaled
$29,231.
Carolyn King, City Staff Representative
Carolyn King reported on other earthquake damage
in the City, and encouraged the group to parti-
pate in Celebrate Saratoga activities.
Barbara Wood, Chair
Barbara Wood reported on 1~ Willys Peck's
collection of the Saratoga Star, and 2) her visit
to the San Juan Capistrano library. She also dis-
cussed the Ga1Tac meeting and asked that staff
register Commissioner Moloney and herself for the
luncheon.
