Action Minutes
Library Commission
August 23,1989
A meeting of the Library Commission was held Wednesday
evening, August 23, 1989. Following is a summary of the
action taken.
I. Roll Call
Commissioners present: Mills, Newby, Peacock,
Wood
Commissioners absent: Dyer (excused), Moloney,
Moore (excused)
II. Report on Posting of Commission Agenda
Carolyn Ring reported that the agenda had been
posted on August 18, 1989.
III. AAnroval of Minutes
The June 28, 1989, minutes were approved as
written.
Commissioner Newby volunteered to take minutes at
the September meeting in the absence of the staff
representative.
IV. Old Business - None
V. New Business
A. Information Service at Saratoga Community
Library - Vicki Raleikau, Program Librarian
Vicki Kaleikau reviewed the two areas in
information services, response to reference
questions, and response to specific requests.
Following her presentation, she also gave a
book talk.
VI. Reports
Susan Fuller, County Librarian
Susan Fuller reported that 1) there is additional
money in the County Library system budget which
will result in additional hours of operation
for the Saratoga Library. Beginning in October,
two hours per week, Wednesday mornings from 10 to
noon, will be added. Reasons for choosing to add
Wednesday morning were that it was relatively in-
expensive and did not require another shift, and

the use by the significant non-working population
of morning hours; and 2) the Board of Supervisors
authorized an additional $19,000 for the literacy
program. There have also been more meetings among
the cities to work out a joint shared funding
package to sustain the Reading Program. It was
noted that the Governor had vetoed the $1,100,000
augmentation request by the legislature.
V,i.cki Kaleikau Community Library
Vicki Kaleikau reported on the progress in the
summer reading program for children, and dis-
tributed a list of talking books which were
purchased by the Friends.
Carolyn King City Staff Representative
Carolyn King reminded Commission members that the
City Council's policy is for them to be attending
Council meetings in order to keep abreast of City
issues. The following rotation schedule for the
remainder of the year was adopted:
September - Mills
October - Wood
November - Newby
December - Peacock
It was also decided that Roy Swanson would be
asked to attend the October meeting to provide
an update on the maintenance of the Library
grounds. Carolyn also informed the Commission on
1) the status of the handicapped access project,
lighting for the parking lot sign, and the effort
to get more volunteers to do cleanup in the
garden; and 2) plans for the Celebrate Saratoga
week which include a November 2 reception at
Montalvo to which Commissioners will be invited.
Barbara Wood, Chair
Barbara Wood reported that she is attempting to
locate missing issues of the Saratoga News for
microfilming. She also announced the study topics
for the next few meetings. The October meeting
will be held at the Book-Go-Round. Barbara also
discussed the statement from the Commission that
she had written for inclusion in the Recognition
Dinner program. She urged all Commission members
to attend the dinner.
