June 28, 1989
A meeting of the Library Commission was held Wednesday evening June 28,
1989. Following is a summary of the action taken.
I. Roll Call
Commissioners present: Dyer, Mills, Moore, Newby, Peacock.,
Wood
Commissioners absent: Moloney (excused)
II. Report on Posting of Commission Aoenda
Carolyn King reported that the agenda had been posted on June 23,
1989.
III. Approval of Minutes
The May 24, 1989 minutes were approved as written.
IV. 1.~ Business - None
V. New Business
A. Literacy Project Presentation
Jaleh Behroozi, Director of the Reading Program for Santa Clara
County Library, presented a slide show and spoke about the
program which is the only library-based literacy program in the
area. The US ranks 49th among 159 countries of the world in
literacy and has dropped 18 places since 1950. An estimated 27
million adults, including 75% of the unemployed population and
65% of prisoners, are functionally illiterate. Since 1985, the
Reading Program has trained over 700 tutors who provide free
one-to-one tutoring to adult learners. Ted MacEachen, a Saratoga
resident who is a member of the Friends of the Reading Program,
also spoke of their fund-raising efforts to help support the
Program.

Susan Fuller. County Librarian
Susan Fuller introduced Linda Arbaugh who is a management intern with
the Library system. Linda spoke about the program and a new staff
handbook which she is working on.
Dolly Barnes. community ibra Supervisor
Dolly Barnes described some of the staff training which is available
through the County and the Library system, and announced that the
next study topic which staff would present to the Commission is on
aspects of Adult services.

Carolyn King reported on the progress of the federally funded handi-
capped access project for the library enterance, and the status of
the Commission's request to provide a light for the parking lot
directional sign.

Barbara Wood discussed vacation scheduling of the Commission
meetings. It was agreed to cancel the July meeting, and see if the
regular August 23 meeting could be held at the Book-Go-Round. It
was also decided to cancel the regular November and December meetings
and hold a special meeting on December 13.
