May 24, 1989
A meeting of the Library Commission was held Wednesday evening, May 24,
1989. Following is a summary of the action taken.
I. Roll Ca
Commissioners present: Dyer, Mills, Moloney, Newby, Peacock.
Commissioners absent: Moore, Wood tall excused)
II. Report on Postino of Commission Aoenda
Carolyn King reported that the agenda had been posted on May 19,
1989.
III. Approval of Minutes
The April 26, 1989 minutes were approved as written.
IV. 01~, Business
A. Expansion Planning
Vice Chair David Newby distributed copies of correspondence
between Chair Barbara Wood and the City Council regarding the
Commission's intention to study the need for library expansion.
U. New Business
A. Outreach Service
Joanna Seymour of the Saratoga Community Library discussed the
outreach service to two convalscent homes in Saratoga. Two
volunteers assist staff in this program.
B. Bookmobile Service
Sylvia Magrogenes of the County Library System discussed the
history and operation of the Bookmobile services.
C. Discussion of County Executive's Request for Support of County
Library Literacy Project
County Librarian Susan Fuller explained the background of this
request, the current funding of the project through a State
grant, and the difficulty in achieving an equitable funding
source. At the Commission's request she will gather information
on how other counties handle literacy programs. The consensus of
the Commission was to express support for the continuation of the
literacy project in two ways: 1) request that a letter from the
Mayor in support of pending funding legislation be sent to key
legislators, and Z) schedule a presentation on the literacy
project for the June 28 meeting and invite City Councilmembers
and school district officials.

VI. Reports
Susan Fuller. County Librarian
Susan Fuller reported 1> that the County has delayed adoption of
the next year's budget until August which will delay the recarpeting
of the library, ~> an equitable agreement was reached regarding the
loss of funds due to the City of Gilroy's redevelopment area, and 3)
her attendance at the recent Legislative Day in Sacramento.

Dolly Barnes reported upon the Library's acquisition of a fax machine
and the hiring of a new clerical supervisor.

Carolyn King reported that the City Council will have a hearing on
the 1989-91 budget June 7 and plans to adopt the budget June ~i.
