April 26, 1989
A meeting of the Library Commission was held Wednesday evening, April 2fi,
1989. Following is a summary of the action taken.
I. Roll Call
Commissioners present: Mills, Moloney, Peacock, Wood
Commissioners absent: Dyer, Moore, Newby Fa11 excused}
II. Report on Pos in of Commission Auenda
Carolyn King reported that the agenda had been posted on April 14,
1589.
III. Aoor~oval of Minutes
The t9arch 22, 1989 minutes were approved as written.
IV. Dld Business
A. Expansion Planning
1. Population Trends - School Distr°icts
There was general discussion of the statistics provided by
Commissioner Newby which indicate declining enrollment irr
the Saratoga-Los Gatos High School District for the next
five years.
V. New Business
A. Saratoga YourTg Adult librarian Judy Thompson and County Library
System Young Adult Coordinator Judy Sasges made a presentation
on current services, material selection, promotion of the
library to young adults in the schools, and service needs for
the next ten years. The addition of small study rooms, more
tables, more floor space and shelving space, as well as mare
librarian hours were mentioned as being needed to expand the
current service. Signs will be added in the library to make
patrons more aware of the Young Adult area.
VI. Reporis
Susan Fuller. punt Librarian
Susan Fuller discussed current and proposed Rededelopment projects
in cities in the library system, and the impact of these projects
on library funding. The County library system loses ~690,043Gi a
year due to frozen property taxes in Redevelopment areas.

Dolly Barnes distributed binders to each Commissioner to use for
the year-long study of the library's services arrd needs. She also
distributed statistics on Sunday usage through (larch.

Carolyn King, City Staff Representative
Carolyn King spoke about the impact on general services, such as
Sunday library operations, if the City's utility users to*; is not
continued after 1990.
Barbara Wno C air
Barbara Wood informed the Commission that sF~e had sent a letter to
the Monte Sereno City Council asking for their continued support of
Sunday library hours. Due to the low attendance at this meeting,
the subject of establishing a general policy for the succession of
Commission officers was postponed.
