March 22, 1989
A meeting of the Library Commission was held Wednesday evening, March 22,
1989. Following is a summary of the action taken.

II. Introduction of New Members
Tour of the Li rar
New Commissioners Barry Mills and Pat Moloney were introduced.
Community Library Supervisor Dally Barnes provided a tour of the
library,
III. Report on Postin^ of Commission Aoenda
Carolyn King reported that the agenda had been posted on March 17,
1989.
IV. Approval of Minutes
The March 22, 1989 minutes were approved as written.
V. Old Business
A. Expansion Planning
1. How to Approach This Task?
Decision to work on the planning as a committee of the whole
rather than forming a task force. The County Librarian and
Saratoga Librarian will work together to schedule staff
members to attend Commission meetings and speak on the
various functions and their needs.
2. Standards
County Librarian Susan Fuller distributed a chart comparing
the ratio of square footage and population served of the
system's libraries. The minimum space need is based on .5
sq. ft. par population.
3. Community Meeting Room Usage
Dolly Barnes discused the use of the Community Room and
distributed a list of organisations which regularly use the
room.
4. Population Trends
This item was postponed due to the absence of Commissioner
Newby.
5. Proposed Civic Center Expansion and Population Growth
Projections
City staff representative Carolyn King reported that the
proposed new Council Chambers will not be designed for
general meeting usage. ABRG's projected population growth
figures for Saratoga are 31,500 in 1995 and 31,200 in 2005.

B. Existance of Master Plan for Library Landscaping
Carolyn King reported that ffi30,000 had been placed on the City's
five year capital improvement plan schedule for library
landscaping in 1991-92, but no plan has been developed yet.

VII. Reports
Susan Fuller. County Librarian
Susan Fuller reported that i) May 10 is Library Legislative Day in
Sacramento, and 2) the Board of Supervisors is giving X15,000 to
the literacy project. She also offered a tour of library headquarters
to the new members as part of their orientation.
Dolly Barnes. Community ibrar Supervisor
Dolly Barnes reported that staff has begun planning for the summer
reading program activities. The program will be "Reading Safari"
and at the first meeting Mayor Karen Anderson will show slides of
her trip to Kenya.

VIII. Oral and Written Communications
Betty Hunter of the Friends of the Library inquired about the
replacement of the Community Room carpet.
