Action Minutes
Library Commission
February Z2, 1989
A meeting of the Library Commission was held Wednesday evening,
February Z2, 1989. Following is a summary of the action taken.
I. Roll Call
All Commissioners present
II. Reg~ort on Postin^ of Commission Aoenda
Carolyn King reported that the agenda had been posted on
February 10, 1989.
III. Approval of Minutes
The January 25, 19$9 minutes were approved as written.
IU. Dld Business
A. January 26 CALTAC Meeting
Commissioners Kanemura, Peacock. and Wood reported on
the meeting. Commissioner k;anemura added that she
felt the discussion of prioritizing library functions
was particularly valuable.
B. February ? Joint Meeting with City Council
1. Availability of Thursday Evenino Hours
County Librarian Susan Fuller said she would
do a survey and investigate the possibility of one
of the system's libraries in the area providing
Thursday evening hours.
2. Maintenance of Libr~rv Grounds
Roy Swanson, City Parks Superintendent, addressed
the overall problems of the maintenance of the
library grounds and responded to the specific
concerns expressed by Commissioners. Staff was
directed to verify the status of a master plan
for landscaping the grounds.
3. Future Expansion of the Building
There was considerable discussion of the direction
to take and the data which would need to be
gathered and considered in order to make a pro-
posal for expansion. It was agreed that City
staff and Library staff would provide some of this
data for the next meeting and then a task force
would be appointed to formulate a strategy.
V. New Business
A. Commission Elections
Barbara Wood was elected as Chair and David Newby as
Vice-Chair. At the next meeting, the Commission will

' discuss developing a method for future rotation of the
offices.
VI. Reports
Susan Fulle r ount Librarian
Susan Fuller presented the cost figures for the 36 open
Sundays and 28 weeks of extra reference staff which the
Commiision has asked City Council to fund for 1989/90.
These will be transmitted to the Council as they are some-
what higher than expected.
Vick.v Kaleikau. Community Librarv
Dicky Kaleikau reported on the operating hours of the
various area libraries, indicating those open on Thursday
evenings. This information will be posted on the library
door as an aid to patrons.

Carolyn King reported on the status of the applications
for the two vacancies.

Presentations on behalf of the Commission were made to the
outgoing members
VII. Oral and Written Communications
Betty Hunter of the Friends of the Library spoke of 1,~
Friends Book Sale which will be the first week of March.
