HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-26-1988 Library Commission Minutes i ~ Action Minutes Li r~i ary Commission October 26, 1988 A meeting of the Library Commission was held Wednesday evening, October 26, 1988. Following is a summary of the action taken. I. Roj,l Call All Commissioners present except Dyer and Moore II. Report on Posting of Comm_is_sion A en Carolyn King reported that the agenda had been pasted on October 14, 1988. III. AQaroval of Minutes The September 28, 1988 minutes were approved as written. IV. Old Business A. CALTAC-POSE Nomination Commissioner Marilyn Kanemura announced that she had been notified that the Sarataga Friends of the Library had been chosen by CALTAC to receive the annual Friends award, based upon the Commission's nomination. Chair Mary Gandrud will send the Friends a congratulatory letter on behalf of the Commission and request a Proclamation from the Mayor. Carolyn King will also includ® an article in the November Network newsletter. B. Status Report on Public Telephone Location City Staff Representative Carolyn King notzd that the phone booth was in place near the driveway. G. '89-'90 Budget County Librarian Susan Fuller announced that she feels con- fident that the upcoming Library system budget will allow for continuation of the current level of service. The Commissioners discussed what should be requested in the aiay of new equipment and services. Following a lengthy dis- cussion of the various computerized magazine index and search systems available, it was concluded that Library staff will explore the possibilities and look very carefully at what will be a cost effective before recommending a system for Saratoga. V. New Business Nane VI. Reports Susan Ful er County Librarian Susan Fuller reported on Proposition 85 on the November 8 ballot which is a X75 million bond issue for library construction and reconstruction. She stressed that this would be a bellwether vote • h for library funds. Dolly Barnes. Comm4nity Librarv SuAervisor Dolly Barnes reported that the program to visit children in schools had resulted in 119 visits last year reaching 5239 children. Carolvn Kin City Staff Representative No additional report. Marv Gandrud, Chair Mary 6andrud reported on the October i1 meeting between the City Council and Commission Chairs, and that the main topic was com- munication. Since the holiday season impacts the regular meeting schedule, the date far the next Library Commission meeting was set for December 14, at the Book-Go-Round on Oak Street. The sub- ject of improving circulation at the Library was postponed until the December meeting. VII. Oral and Written Communications Mary Jean Fenn of the Friends of the Library reported on the recent paperback book sale and auction which netted X240@.
