Action Minutes
`T ~ Library Commission
September 28, 1988
A meeting of the Library Commission was held Wednesday evening,
September 28, 1988. Following is a summary of the action taken.
I. Roll Call
All Commissioners present except Dyer and Moore
II. Report on Posting of Commission Agenda
Carolyn King reported that the agenda had been posted on
September 23, 1988.
III. Aooroval of Minutes
The July 27, 1988 minutes were amended to include reference
to the request for a nomination letter to CALTAC from the Library
Supervisor for the Friends of the Library.
IV. Sgeaker
Holly Reed of The Reading Program, which is part of a state-
wide effort by public libraries to teach adults to read and
write, made a presentation and answered questions on how the
program works.
V. Old Business
A. City Recognition Dinner
Chair Mary Gandrud thanked Commissioner David Newby far
standing in for her at the annual dinner.
B. 9/24 All County Commissioners Meeting
Commissioner Bobbie Peacock reported on the September 24
meeting which was held in Cupertino.
C. CALTAC-POSE Nomination
Commissioner Marilyn Kanemura passed out copies of the
letters which were submitted to CALTAC nominating the
Saratoga Friends of the Library for the annual awards.
D. Status Report on Public Telephone Locations
City Staff Representative Carolyn King announced that
a public telephone would be installed on the Library
grounds in approximately three weeks. She also re-
ported that the City Engineering Department's study
recommended that public telephones be placed at an
additional eight sites throughout the Gity to enhance
public safety.
V. New Business
A. CALTAC Meeting in Fresno November 12
Marilyn Kanemura commented that she would be attending
the meeting as a member of the County Library Commission.

Janice Yee. Co nty, Library
Janice Yee said that this is the time to be thinking of requests
for the budget for next fiscal year. This item will be agendized
for the October meeting.

Dolly Barnes reported i) that she and Friends of the Library
President Martha Beverett had decided to ask the Saratoga Rotary
Cluh to provide approximately X6,000 to microfilm the Library's
collection of issues of the Saratoga News which date back to
1957, Z) that an Eagle Scout was doing a good job of cleaning
up the Garden area, and had refinished the benches in the
Garden as well, 3) the Board of Supervisors had passed a
Resolution commending children's librarians, 4) the models of
the proposed freeway interchanges which are on display at the
library are attracting a lot of attention.

Carolyn King reminded the Commission of the joint meeting with the
City Council scheduled for February ?, and the meeting with the
Council and Commission Ghairs on October 11.
