I, R 1 Call All Commissioners present except Gandrud Ii. Resort on Postino of Commission Agenda Carolyn King reported that the agenda had been posted on March 16, 1988. III. Aooroval of M minutes The February ~4, 1988 minutes were approved as written. iU. Old Business A. Discussion of Feasibility of Extension of Sunday Hours County Librarian Susan Fuller and Community Library Supervisor Dolly Barnes provided information on the impact of extending Sunday service on the staff, the Sunday use of the library and cost data. After considerable discussion of the needs, level of service and cost effectiveness, a motion was passed 6-0 to ask the Council to consider increasing support for Sunday service by ;1;605 beyond the budgeted amount for extra help at the reference desk and approximately ~~,000 for four additional Sundays which would be a step toward the Commission's goal of providing Sunday service year-round. Staff will prepare a proposal to Council as part of the budget adjustment process for the second year of the current two-year budget. The Commission Chair will send a letter to the Monte Sereno Council asking for their continued support of four Sundays. B. Discussion of Donation of Benches City Staff Representative Carolyn King reported on the Saratoga Rotary Club's intention to provide outdoor waiting benches near the library entrance, and to do additional landscaping in front of the library. If the cost is greater than the X1,000 that Rotary is alloting, the project can be phased over a two year period, or the Friends of the Library may be asked for matching funds. The Commission agreed that this project should be coordinated through the City's Maintenance Department. C. Election of Officers tChair and Uice Chair for 88/89) Mary Beth Gandrud was elected Chair, effective in June, and Dick Dyer was re-elected as Vice Chair. • ~' .~ U. New Business None UI. Reports Susan Ful r County Librarian Susan Fuller reported that 1) the Governor has signed a bill to put a bond issue on the November ballot for X75 million for reno- vation and construction of libraries, 2) a revenue producing ballot measure failed in Shasta County, 3) the County Library Commission will meet at the newly opened Cupertino Library on April 4 and the recent opening on the Commission has been filled by an appointment from Milpitas, and 4) the annual Legislative Day in Sacramento will be May ii. Dol1V Barnes, Community Library Supervisor Dolly Barnes reported that t) the trial period for opening the book drop during library hours has ended, there were no negative effects and it will remain open, 2) Villa Montalvo will recreate Senator Phelan's library, 3> 20 of the most popular PBS video series will soon be available to the libraries on a rotating basis. Carolyn Kin°. City Staff Representative Carolyn King informed the Commission she would be on vacation at the time of the April meeting. It was decided to cancel the meeting. She also reported on the status of the City's survey of the location of public telephones throughout the City. Marilyn Kanemura. Chair Marilyn Kanemura reported that 1) she had prepared and Commissioner Dyer had presented a certificate of commendation to the Friends of the Library on their 5th anniversary celebration of the opening of the Book-Go-Round, 2) the Commission should consider budgeting funds for incidental supplies next year, and 3) the Friends of the Library Board will be sending a representative to Commission meetings.
