Action Minutes
Library Commission
February 24, 1988
A meeting of the Library Commission was held Wednesday evening,
February 24, 1988. Following is a summary of the action taken.
I. Roll Call
Commissioners present were Dyer, Kanemura, Peacock and Wood
II. Reoort on Postino of Commission Aoenda
Carolyn King reported that the agenda had been posted on
February 19, 1988.
III. Aparoval of Minutes
The January 27, 1988 minutes were approved as written.
IU. Oral Communications
Gladys Armstrong, President, Friends of the Library
Gladys Armstrong reviewed a number of items of interest to the
Commission including: dates of the Book. Sale and Book-Go-Round
anniversary celebration, the funds that Friends were able to
donate to the library in 19$7, and the library tour planned for
the group of Russian visitors in April. There was discussion of
the possible donation by the Friends of outdoor benches for
library patrons, and the request of the Commission for attendance
at Commission meetings by a Friends Board member.
V. Oid Business
A. Review of February 23 Joint Meeting with City Council
Commission Chair Marilyn Kanemura reviewed the items which had
been informally discussed with the City Council. The primary
topic, the feasibility of increasing Sunday service, will be
on the agenda for the March Commission meeting.
VI. New Business
A. Election of Officers
Election of new officers was postponed to the March meeting
due to the number of absent Commission members.
VII. Reports
Susan Fuller. County Librarian
Susan Fuller reported that 1) the new librarian in Los Gatos is a
former County employee, 2) the County Executive is authorizing
purchase of a number of new chairs for the library's meeting
room, 3) the legislature is hearing two library related
bills, 56181 and 56385, and 4) the Cupertino library is still
expected to open by the first of April.

Dolly Barnes expressed her appreciation for the work of the
members of the Friends of the Library, and of the benefits of
their community involvement.
Carolyn Kina. City Staff Representative
Carolyn King informed the Commission of the City's acceptance
of dedication of the alley behind Saratoga Avenue and Saratoga-
Los Gatos Road, and that it will be named for former Postmaster
George Whalen, who also served on the County Library Commission.
Marilyn Kanemura. Chair
Marilyn Kanemura reported on the efforts of Commissioner Dyer
which resulted in a donation from IBM of X1800 to the Friends of
the Library.
