28 November 1984
Commissioners Present: Gandrud, Kanemura, Mahler, Morrison, Moss, &
Wood
Library Staff Present: Barbara Campbell & Lois Thomas
The November 28, 1984 meeting of the Saratoga Library Commission
was called to order by Chairman Moss at 7:43 p.m. in the Community
Room of the Saratoga Library. Minutes of the October 24, 1984
meeting were approved as read.
Barbara Campbell reported that she met with City Manager Wayne
Dernetz on October 26, 1984.
The Saratoga City Council received the Commission's recommendations
concerning Sunday library operations. During the 1985 budget
hearings, the Council will consider its support of Sunday operating
expenses.
A survey mailed out to Saratoga residents in November included
questions concerning the library. Respondents requested more
hours for the library.
In brainstorming about raising additional funds for the library,
the following points were discussed: 1. Some commissioners were
pessimistic about increasing library funding with_g, tax override,
while others suggested waiting until the Los Altos Library tax
override measure was put to a vote before rejecting that process
as a means of raising additional monies. 2. Barbara Campbell
reported that the state of California in 1984-85 funded public
libraries at 50X of the requested level; there is a possibility
of 100X funding in 1985-86. 3. The Friends of the Saratoga
Librarie$ contributed $10,481 to the library. 4. The library needs
to ~e more visible during the city's budget process.
The Commissioners decided to rotate attendance at City Council
meetings on a monthly basis. Commissioner Gandrud will observe
the meetings during January and report to the Commission of
Council activities•and decisions, especially as they relate to the
library.
Lois Thomas reported on personnel changes. Nancy Pifer has been
promoted and has transferred to the Campbell Library; she has been
replaced by Jill Lakstigala. Shirley Legerwood is retiring in
December; because of budget restrictions, her hours will be filled
by extra help rather than by a permanent replacement. Commissioner
Mahler expressed her concern about the impact on the library and
staff morale of the county's personnel policies. Ms. Campbell
described the personnel selection process of the county.
Barbara Campbell reported that Janice Yee will be acting County
Librarian until a County Librarian is selected and takes charge in
May, 1985.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:45 p.m. Respe~tfull submitted,
Marily Kanemura
