MEETING
27 June 1984
Commissioners Present: Beverett, Gandrud, Kanemura, Mahler, Morrison,
& Moss
Library Staff Present: Barbara Campbell & Lois Thomas
City Staff Present: Joan Pisani
The June 27, 1984 meeting of the Saratoga Library Commission was
called to order by Chairman Moss at 7:42p.m, in the Community Room
of the Saratoga Library. Minutes of the May 23, 1984 meeting were
read and approved.
Joan Pisani reported that expenditures from the library bond fund
for additions to the parking lot were approved by the City Council
on June 12, 1984. Since the addition was judged to be of low priority,
no completion date was scheduled. The project will be completed
within the next fiscal year. A subcommittee of Library Commission
members will oversee development of the parking lot design.
Barbara Campbell updated the Commission on deliberations by the Los
Altos Library Commission on the feasibility of initiating a tax
override to raise funds for the Los Altos Library. Ms. Campbell also
reported that Saratoga Library's $56,545 budget deficit for 1984-85
will be offset by City and County contributions and by a cut of the
Library Assistant staff position. The city of Saratoga will contri-
bute $17,800; Monte Sereno, $1500; the County, $1411. Barbara
Campbell also discussed the county library's budget process.
According to Lois Thomas, nine Speedy workers are working in the
library under the supervision of a library page during the summer.
She also announced that a "wish list" was published by the City
listing library requests.
Mary Moss reported on a meeting she attended with members of the "
Saratoga City Council and chairmen of other City commissions. Some
of the points discussed that pertained to the library were: library
hours, Sunday service, and the description of budget items. (Ms.
Campbell stated that the City of Cupertino pays $21,000 for opening
the Cupertino Public Library for four hours each Sunday.) Each
Commission was asked to determine its annual goals.
Joan Pisani, who also attended the meeting, added that, since the
Council will develop a 3-5 year plan for the Capital Improvement
Budget in~January, 1985, the Library Commission may want to make
suggestions for library allocations from that budget. She also
reported that workshops for city commissioners are scheduled for
the fall, and that Commission reports will be added to the Council
agenda.
The next meeting of the Saratoga Library Commission was scheduled
for July 25, 1984.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:05 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Marilyn "May Kan~ura
