Joan Pisani reported on the new drawings submitted to the ;ommission by Bob Shook for parking lot additions along Saratoga Avenue. A cost estimate by traffic engineer Irwin Dorsey for plan 1B for 87 spaces was approximately $60,000. Commissioners considered the parking lot options and discussed the follnw~.ng considerations: 1) concern for safety because of the loss visibility of building the parking lot addition behind the library in option 3A; 2) concern for the high cost and loss of Saratoga Avenue frontage of the new plans (options 1B, 2B, and 3B); 3) stipulation that plan lA, if approved, have lighting in addition to that on the drawing, especially along the orchard and at the back corner; 4)suggestion that the parking spaces be perpendicular instead of slanted to allow for maximizing the number of parking spaces; and 5)allowance for future expansion of the parking lot. Commissioner Beverett made a motion the the Commission choose between options lA and 1B, with perpendicular parking spaces to maximize usage and with lighting along the orchard and at the back of the lot in addition to what is on the drawings to maximize safety. The Commission unanimously decided on option lA. Since a request for funding for additions to the parking lot was already submitted to the City Council for the 1984-85 budget, Mrs. Pisani will notify the City Manager of the Commission's recommendation .of option lA. The City Council will consider and adopt the budget in late May. The Library Commission will give its approval on the final drawings for the parking lot to ensure that its requirement for additional lighting is met. Barbara Campbell reported that the correct bar-codes will be reprinted at the company's expense. Mrs. Campbell will be meeting with volunteers who helped with bar-coding the library's collection to explain the company's mistake and what the library is doing to correct it. Speedy workers will be hired during the summer to work with a clerical supervisor to replace the incorrect bar-codes. Ms. Campbell discussed legislative bill AB2568 which intends to extend for two years a tax deduction for companies donating computer equipment to schools and to expand the deductions to include dona- tions to community colleges and public libraries. She also reported on SB358 which is in the Governor's budget at 50% funding. Ms. Campbell will visit Sacramento during the California Library Associa- tion's Legislative Day. Barbara Campbell explained to Commissioners provisions of the Cali- fornia Library Services Act which funds reimbursements to libraries for non-resident use and imbalance of services. Barbara Wood and Barbara Campbell will attend the Monte Sereno City Council meeting to discuss library programs and services. Lois Thomas reported on various staff changes: Fran Forrest will retire in May; Shirley Legerwood is on disability leave and has a part-time replacement. Patron Appreciation Day will be held on Mary 19, 1984, with refreshments served and volunteer participation lists posted. A second xerox will be installed for patron use. The Commission voted to maintain its current officers for another year. The next meeting was scheduled for May 23, 1984. The meeting was adjourned at 9:56 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Marilyn// May ~nemura
