and Wood.

City Staff Present: Pat Mullfns
City Council Observor: Virginia Laden Fanelli
The June 22, 1983 meeting of the Saratoga Library Commission was called
to order at 7:45 p.m. by Vice-Chairman Andrew Beverett. The minutes
of the April 27, 1983 meeting were read and approved. On behalf of
the Commission, Com~nuissioner Morrison will send a congratulatory card
to City Staff representative Joan Pisani on the birth of her baby.
A discussion was held on the request made to the City of Monte Sereno
on June 21, 1983 for additional funds to maintain library services
because of budgetary shortages for 1983-84. The Monte Sereno City
Council delayed decision on that request for two weeks.
Pat Mullins provided progress reports on the following library projects:
1. SIGNS: The lettering of the sign above the front door was re-
furbished. The "hours of operation", book drop, and parking lot
entrance signs were installed. Upon the request of Commissioner
Morrison, Niles. MulllGns will check with the Street Maintenance
Dept. on installation of street signs identifying the library.
2. LIGHTING: The Commissioners voiced their opinion that lighting
for the driveway and parking lot be top priority when the library
budget is adopted on July 1, 1983.
3. CIRCULATION SYSTEM: According to Mrs. Thomas, the project to
convert the present circulation system. to a computerized one was
opened up for bid again by the county, with Los Altos and
Cupertino libraries installing the first systems. Saratoga's
system is scheduled to be in operation by Jan 1., 1984. Staff
members will begin affixing bar codes to books this summer. The
new circulation system requires bar coding all library books and
changing to new borrower's cards.
4. FRONT DOORS: Pat Mullj,ns reported on a meeting with Barbara
Campbell, Lois Thomas, and a sales representative from Automatic
Door Systems to consider installation of a system to facilitate
entrance and provide handicapped access. The company bid $3000
to automate the existing front doors so that the push of a button
can open the doors to provide handicapped or eased access.
Commissioner Gandrud will arrange for Commission and Staff members
to visit and inspect buildings with this system already installed
to evaluate the feasibility and safety of this automatic door
system. In addition to automating the doors, an estimate of
$150 was given on adding glass panels to the doors to increase
visibility and decrease the doors' weight.
Lois Thomas discussed the coin-operated personal computer in the
library. There is at present no statistics available on its usage.
The library staff is experiencing no problem with its users.
Pat Mullins reported that the installation of a cable line to the
library at this time would cost more than $4000 because the cable company
is not laying cable in this vicinity. Commissioner Beverett will write
a letter to the City Council requesting that the cable company include
cable lines to the library when it is installing cable in the vicinity
of Saratoga Avenue and the library.
According to Mrs. Thomas the funding of library services by the State
under SB358 is in jeopardy.
A meeting will be scheduled for July.
The June 22, 1983 meeting was adjourned at 9:33 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
