The meeting of the Saratoga Library Commission was called to order by
Chairman Moss at 7:34 p.m. Minutes of the Mar. 23, 1983 meeting were
read and approved. Barbara Wood was introduced as the new commissionez
representing Monte Sereno.
Barbara Campbell reported on the Joint Commission meeting scheduled
for May 2, 1983 at the Milpitas Library. The agenda for the meeting
will include a discussion of cable TV and its impact on libraries.
Mrs. Campbell also announced a workshop for library trustees at
the Livermore Public Library on May 7, 1983.
According to Pat Mullins, the Saratoga cable TV franchise has esta-
blished a bulletin board on Channel 8 for local announcements.
Annouhcements for that bulletin board can be submitted to the cable
TV office.
Lois Thomas reported on her discussipns with Mr. Becker, a contractor,
about the library doors. According to Mr. Becker, there would be no
construction problem in adding glass panes to the doors to increase
visibility and to lighten the weight of the doors. He also suggested
changing the door hinges to facilitate opening. Mr. Becker will submit
plans and cost estimates for the project.
Joan Pisani discussed the sign for the library parking lot. The origi
contractor would not do the work as revised by the Commission. Mrs.
Pisani submitted two new designs and cost estimates from two sign
companies. The Commission agreed to allocate $600 for design 4~1 (see
attached drawings) by the Design Shop. City personnel will install
the sign and paint the lettering white.

with the patio maintenance. Lois Thomas suggested adding
the patio, but no final decision was made.
In other announcements, Joan Pisani discussed: 1) the repainting of
the curbing; 2) contact with the Volunteer Center to add the library's
needs to its "wish catalog" 3) agendas to be sent regularly to
the Monte Sereno~City Council; 4) disposition of the capital improve-
ment fund. The balance in that fund is $36,500. Budget requests
submitted to the City Council include $800 for lights for the parking
lot; $6500 for the front doors; $3000 for a library sign; $1000,to
move the solar panels if needed; and the cost of the parking lot sign.
A request for funds to repair building leaks will be added to the budge
at a later date when the cause and method of repair is determined.
Barbara Campbell announced that the Board of Supervisors approved re-
imbursement to the cities of their augmenting funds. Saratoga's share
is $4305; Monte Sereno's, $507; the Friends, $1000. The remainder of
the Friends contribution will be used for book purchases. According to
Mrs. Campbell there may be a $200,000-$300,000 discrepancy between
estimated revenues and expenditures in the 1983-84 county library budge
According to Lois Thomas, i) on May 12th, at 7:30, in the Community Roo
the library staff will host a reception for library volunteers and
Friends; and 2) the library will receive from the supplier a new comput
system, printer, table, and hard disk.
Pat Mahler reported on the library volunteer program: 22 volunteers
help an average of 100 hours per month; 58 volunteers worked on the
book sale for a total of 7!:0 hours. A volunteer from West Valley
College helps in the library 4 hours per week. Mary Beth Gandrud com-
mented on the growing list of volunteer staffers for the Book-Go-Round
which opened on Mar. 17, with an open house on April 17.
Pat Mullins will replace Joan Pisani who will be on maternity leave.
A May meeting will be called if needed.
