Staff: Janice Yee & Lois Thomas
City: Joan Pisani
The Meeting was called to order by Chairman Moss at 7:35 p.m.
The Minutes of the May 26, 1982 meeting will be presented at the
Commission's next meeting due to the absence of the Secretary.
According to Joan Pisani, the plans for widening the driveway to
the parking lot are still under review by the City offices. The
drainage problem will be considered in turn. Mary Moss was
authorized by' Pat Mullins to send in a purchase request for the
benches.
Commissioner Beverett reported on task force recommendations out-
lining the role of the Library Commissioneas to organization,
operation, basic responsibilities, duties, and relationship to
City. The task force will develop a draft to present first to
the Commission, which, upon approval, will be forwarded to the
City Council with the recommendation to make the "role of the
Commission" a part of the public record.
Mary Moss displayed architect's drawings for a property sign and
an overhang for the book drop. The Commission recommended in-
stallation of two signs; 1) a small sign identifying the entrance
to library parking which would be lighted and lettered on both
sides, and 2) a large sign - lighted, approximately 6 feet high,
and lettered "Saratoga Community Library" - for the front of the
library positioned between the walkway and the sidewalk. The
Commission approved plans for the overhang.
Janice Yee, County Librarian, reported on the anticipated budget
deficit, The county library system will face a deficit of
approximately $450,000; Saratoga's share of the deficit will be
$67,000. A discussion of the deficit's impact followed, with
consideration of the curtailment of services, personnel cuts, and
drastic reduction in hours of operation. A motion was made,
seconded, and unanimously approved by the Commission to request
that the City Council provide Saratoga's share of the $27,000 needed
to maintain current library hours. Chairman Moss was empowered to
write a letter to the City Council detailing this request and in-
cluding the latest statistics showing marked increases in circulation
and reference services.
According to Lois Thomas, the carpet in the Community Room has been
cleaned. Effort will be made to bleach out the remaining stains.
Announcement was made that the Library building received an
architect's award for design excellence. The award will be presented
at the July 7, 1982 City Council meeting.
The next Commission meeting was scheduled for Aug. 25, 1982.
