MINUTES
SARATOC~A LIBRARY CGMMISSION
April 28, 1982
Present: Commissioners: Beverett, Gandrud, Kanemura, Mahler, Moss,
Savage and Morrison
Staff: Lois Thomas and Carol Jaech, Deputy County Librarian

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Chairman Moss.
The minutes of the ~~anuary 17th meeting were approved.
Joan Pisani explained and answered questions concerning the 14 requests
made by the Commission.Each item was discussed as follows:

The tile, delivered by the City to the library for replacement of
the water soiled carpet, will not be used., since the problem has
been temporarily ~~~I~r-~dy the carpet cleaned and the librarians
prefer keeping the carpet.
The Park Maintenance staff has the library on a weekly schedule-for
general maintenance and litter control.
The improved muffling of the book dro will be further pursued by
the County since it is not a City responsibility.
7. The base plate project is in the process of being completed.
8. The decision to use tablesfor the Comcats rather than wall attach-
ments has been made, the cost to be handled by the Friends for the
three tables..
Gf the remaining 6 items, the following motions were made and seconded
that requests be made by Chairman Moss to the City Council~~for-:requi~~
itions for (1) plans for the improvement of the slope for better drain-
age by the storage room (2) awning over the book drop, (3) plastic
insertion between the rafters over the entrance, (4) installation of
benches approved through the Parks and Recreation Department (choice
e~ benches having been made by the commission , three 8 ft. mahogany
contour with redwood stain, the cost of which will hopefully be made
through donations).
The following 2 items have been postponed until further research has
been made: i~'idening of the driveway--The proposal made by the City
with an estimated cost of $2,000.00 will have a follow-up investigation
by Joan Pisani, Dan Trinidad, engineer, and Wil Morrison f or possible
improvement upon the proposal._ Signs In-put from the commission
on the types and placement of proper signs identifying the Library will
be gathered by Commissioner Morrison and presented at the NIay Commission
meeting.
A report from the County made by Deputy County Librarian, Carol Jaech,
included the possible deficit of $600,000.- 800.,;000. in the budget (base
of 5 million; the expenditure of $150,000. on a new circulating system
for Los Altos and Cupertino Libraries; a formula for distribution of
1982-83 salary funds based on population, assessed valuation and cir-
culation. N?s. Jaech also handed out a compilation of facts relating to
Senate Bill 358, urginq't,~.e~ters be sent for the passage of same; and
a draft of Mission Statement of the Santa Clara County Library .
Lois Thomas reported that a third ~:~ember of the Art Jurist Committee
has been suggested, auzanne Jol~:~rt, locala$t dealer. The Commission
approved hce:r appointment; Chairman Moss will notify her.

Paperbacks have been distributed to the Senior Center to be circulated
on the honor system.
The front door is still being studied for the installation of the
pneumatic system.
Volunteers will be honored at a reception April 29 at 7:30 p.m. All
commissioners are invited to attend.
Commissioner Beverett reports that by the May meeting he and his comm-
itee will have completed their research on the duties and responsibilities
of the Library Commission, and will present a format to serve as a
guideline for present and future commissioners.
The next meeting was set for May 26, 1982.
