Saratoga Library Commission
September 23, 1981 7:30 at the Community Library
]'resent: Comm oners Beverett, Yanemura, Mahler, riorrison,
i~ioss and Savage
Staff: Barbara Campbell and Lois Thomas
A brief review of the consolidation of the Village and Community
Libraries as approved by the Saratoga City Council by a vote of
4-1 was discussed. Comments concerning the role the Commission
should now take, were made and it was decided that when Commissioners
Beverett and Kanemura have completed their research into the duties
and responsibilities of the Library Commission, we as a group will
be in a better position to act. It was agreed, however, that
our attention as commissioners should be directed to the Community
Library and its needs. As individuals, involvement as to the fate
of the Village Library building, would be voluntary and separate
from the Commission. It was also suggested that any letter written
to the News concerning library activates should be one composed
by the Commission , signed and presented by the chairman to the
paper. Personal opinions and suggestions, if publicized, must
be on an individual basis in the role of a citizen rather thah a
commissioner.
Barbara Campbell will be re ommendinq to the Board that the Village
Library be closed by Dece e 31, 1981 and the building returned to
the Cit b Januar 31, 1 81.
Commissioner Beverett sug e ed~a timetable to be presented to
City Management and with the in-put and discussion of the
Commission members a motion was made and seconded by Marilyn Kanemura
as follows:That Chairman Moss be requested to present to city
management through Pat i~iullens a suggested timetable for the
transition of the Village Library with termination of service on
December 4, 1981, and completion of move by the County b~ December 31
with re-o eninq dependent upon the renovation of the building by
the city.
Barbara Campbell said all books and shelving will be removed before
renovation and then if desired, better shelving will be put back
in for use should the community decide upon a reading room. Also
a book collection will be available.
As to the impact on the library positions resulting from the con-
solidation, Barbara Campbell referred to her memorandum of July 30
which listed Full time Librarian I/II-X30,000. Clerk 1/2 time,
$9,000. Janitor, $4,000. plus book budget augmentation for the
balance of the $48,320. Other possibilities as to service, rondays
and Tuesday 10-12, and Sunday service (4 hrs.) were given estimate
costs of $7,680 each for Monday and Tuesday and $14,863 for Sunday
Lois Thomas invited commission to a coffee for ~:'olunteers.
She reported that the door to the meeting room has been keyed,
the light standards have been delivered, the storage area needs only
shelving to be complete, and the book drop has been moved from the
main entrance to a more convenient location in the par]cing lot.
The next meeting was set for November 18,c~1.981. ~~The.-nt~sting
was adjourned at 10 p.m.
