SARATOGA CITY COUNCIL
MEETING DATE: June 19, 2002 AGENDA ITEM:
ORIGINATING DEPT: Public Works CITY MANAGER:
PREPARED BY: DEPT HEAD:
SUBJECT: City of Saratoga Spring 2002 Cleanup Summary
RECOMMENDED ACTION(S):
1. Receive Report.
2. Authorize City Manager to execute payment in the amount of $39,467.00 to Green Valley
Disposal Company for the 2002 City of Saratoga Spring Cleanup.
REPORT SUMMARY:
This years Spring 2002 cleanup event was a resounding success, with high levels of resident
participation, resulting in 293 tons of refuse being collected from April 29 — May 17, 2002. The
cleanup event ran smoothly, with City staff receiving no complaint calls and several calls from
residents supporting the event. Green Valley Disposal Company provided exceptional service
during the cleanup event, responding quickly and efficiently to customer needs and picking up all
waste left out by our residents.
This cost of this year's cleanup event is $39,467.00 (under the $45,000.00 approved budget) and
is $36,371.00 dollars less than last year's cleanup event (primarily due to the elimination of the
bulky item pickup).
Staff recommends authorizing the City Manager to execute payment in the amount of $39,467.00
to Green Valley Disposal for the 2002 City of Saratoga Spring Cleanup.
FISCAL IMPACTS:
There are sufficient funds in the adopted budget to support the spring cleanup event.
CONSEQUENCES OF NOT FOLLOWING RECOMMENDED ACTION(S):
Green Valley Disposal Company will not be paid for services rendered.

Re: 2002 Saratoga Clean up
Dear Cary:
During the weeks of April 29, May 6, and May 13 2002 Green Valley Disposal
conducted a clean up for the City of Saratoga residents. The clean up was successful and
without incident. We collected 293 tons of debris.
This year, the City of Saratoga made two changes to clean up. The two changes were
Perform clean up over a three -week period of time. Spreading the clean up over
three weeks increased the safety and efficiency for the collection drivers and
equipment.
• Have bulky items included as a pay- for - service option. Having bulky items
included as a pay- for - service option better enabled us to estimate the volume of
material to be collected. Limiting material to normal household debris allowed
residents to discard unwanted items, while controlling the volume of material set
out.
Both of these changes were positive changes. The response we received from the
residents was one of appreciation for the services provided.
Enclosed is the invoice for the 2002 clean up. The amount of $39,467 was under the
estimated amount for this year's clean up.
Please forward this to the appropriate departments for approval and payment. If you have
any questions, please give me a call.
Sincerel ,
Phil Couchee
