HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Resolution 06-080RESOLUTION 06-080 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SARATOGA SUPPORTING THE Santa Clara COUNTY INITIATIVE FOR THE CONSERVATION AND PRESERVATION OF HILLSH)ES, RANCHLANDS AND AGRICULTURAL LANDS WHEREAS, the County General Plan provides a good framework for County land use but needs to be strengthened and made more stable; and WHEREAS, political pressure on the County Board of Supervisors to sprawl into rural lands will only increase over time and in key contrast, repeal or weakening of the Inifiate would have to be approved by voters of Santa Clara County; and WHEREAS, by helping to stop sprawl in rural areas, this Initiative provides balance between urban areas and the beauty, peace and environmental health of rural lands; and WHEREAS, this initiative better protects our watersheds and its reservoirs and underground aquifers which means better water quality and supply; and WHEREAS, by reducing the development potential in the rural areas this initiative reduces taxpayer exposure to property, road, water, septic, and other repair due to natural hazard risks, and too much development in the hillsides can add to soil destabilization, surface and groundwater pollution, and heightened fire risks which increase jeopazdy to rural and urban residents; and WHEREAS, the areas subject to this Initiative are not planned by the County or are suitable for affordable housing and nothing in the Initiative would preclude the Country its legal obligation to provide funding for housing; and WHEREAS, this measure protects our overall quality of life -areas that make this still a special place to live and work - it helps us maintain a sense of identity, of place, and community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Saratoga City Council endorses the Santa Clara County Initiative for the Conservation and Preservation of Hillsides, Ranchlands and Agricultural Lands, Measure A on the November 2006 ballot. The above and foregoing resolution was passed and adopted by the City Council of the City of Saratoga at a regular meeting held on the 18`h day of October 2006, by the following vote: AYES: Councilmembers Kathleen King, Nick Streit, Ann Waltonsmith, Vice Mayor Aileen Kao, Mayor Norman Kline NOES: None ABSENT: Councilmember Nick Streit
