RESOLUTION SUPPORTING ELECTION ON FORMATION
OF A COUNTYWIDE TRANSIT DISTRICT IN JUNE 1972
WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors requested the Transportation Policy
Committee recommendation on when to hold a transit district formation election;
The Transportation Policy Committee has requested formal written expressions
from each of the cities in Santa Clara County so that the Transportation Policy
recommendations to the Board of Supervisors can be as solidly based and compre-
hensive as possible;
Transportation, and particularly the provision of suitable comprehensive mass
transit facilities, remains one of the most important issues for the future of
Santa Clara County;
Senate Bill 325 (Chapter 1400; 1971 Statutes) enacts the Mills-Alquist-Deddeh
Act and requires the establishment of a local transportation fund utilizing monies
which will be generated from within Santa Clara County;
Senate Bill 325 (Chapter 1400; 1971 Statutes) permits the formation of an
operating transit district without the necessity for seeking additional and
separate revenue sources as was the case in prior district formation elections;
The provisions of fragmented transit services causes interface and coordina-
tion problems which will detrimentally affect transit ridership potential;
The provision of transit facilities should be on a system basis and on a com-
prehensive basis for the benefit of all jurisdictions and all citizens of Santa
Clara County;
Formation of a transit district at the earliest possible time is necessary to
insure the proper integrated system for the County as a whole;
SB 325 revenues begin accruing July 1, 1972, with first funds expected to be
available in October 1972;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Saratoga
supports the concept of integrated countywide transit;
That the City Council urges the Transportation Policy Committee and the Board
of Supervisors to call an election for June 6, 1972 on the formation of the Santa
Clara County Transit District so that the local funds generated by SB 325 can be
programmed and spent locally in the best interests of the citizens of Saratoga
and of the citizens of Santa Clara County;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Saratoga
directs its staff and urges all of its commissions, public bodies and residents
to support this concept at the June 6 election.
The above and foregoing resolution was regularly introduced and thereafter
passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of
Saratoga held on the 19th day of January, .!~7.2, by the following vote:
