SUPPORTING THE ADVISORY MEASURE FOR AN INDOOR SPORTS
AND ENTERTAINMENT ARENA IN THE NOVEMBER 7, 1972
GENERAL ELECTION
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAR~OGA
Whereas the Board of Supervisors of the County of Santa Clara has
placed on the ballot for the November, 1972 general election a measure
seeking an advisory vote from the citizens of this county indicating
their desire for the construction of a sports and entertainment arena
for use by all citizens of the county=
Whereas the proposed Arena will be of interest to those who are
sports-minded, with facilities for basketball, ice hockey, boxing,
wrestling, tennis and other activities; Whereas the Arena will also
be available for large crowds for circuses, pop concerts, pageants,
ice shows, rodeos, horse shows, etc.;
Whereas for those devoted to civic improvement the facilities can
be used for civic celebrations, religious programs and the like;
Whereas, the Arena will promote business and employment through
its construction, through its operation, through trade shows and other
activities;
Whereas, the Arena will provide a place for family outings together,
stimulate wholesome sports, inspirational events and clean entertainment
for youngsters;
Whereas, the Arena will afford an opportunity for outstanding cul-
tural attractions;
Whereas, the Arena will improve the county's image, thereby that
of the cities within the county;
Whereas, the annual amortization cost of $2,180,000 for the $22
million facility represents only $2 per year per person (for an average
family of three), far less than costs of travel for one event outside
the county;
Whereas a recently completed Stanford Research Institute study found
the Arena will be self-supporting; in fact is expected to produce $250,000
a year above operating costs;
