HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Resolution 641 RESOLUTION NO. 641 RESOLUTION URGING DEFEAT OF PROPOSITION 14 IN THE NOVEMBER ELECTION WHEREAS, Proposition 14, an initiative Constitutional amendment, will be on the state=ide general election ballot in November, and ~HEREAS, Proposition 14 is alleged to provide property tax relief, and WHEREAS, Proposition 14 will not provide overall tax relief for homeowners and tenters, but will result in a massive tax shift penalizing aged persons, renters, and single-family homeowners, and WHEREAS, Proposition 14 will seriously weaken local self-government by removing the ability of cities, counties, schools and special districts to adequately finance needed services and facilities, and WHEREAS, Proposition 14 will also remove the ability of the State Legislature to deal effectively with revenue and taxation matters by freezing critically deficient requirements into the Constitution, and WHEREAS, Proposition 14 will require substantial increases in State taxes to replace a $1.2 billion deficit which the initiative creates, and WHEREAS, Proposition 14 will produce a chaotic situation threatening ongoing city, county, special district and school activities as well as preventing orderly long-term development, and WHEREAS, Proposition 14 is opposed by such responsible and respected indivi- duals and organizations as Governor Ronald Reagan, the California Teachers Association, the California School Boards Association, the California Congress of Parents and Teachers, the California Labor Federation AFL-CI0, the California State Chamber of Commerce~ the League of California Cities~ and the County Super- visors Association of California, NOW~ THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Saratoga officially goes on record as opposing Proposition 14 and urging its defeat in November, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this opposition be communicated to all groups and individuals within the community who are interested in effective local government.
