RESOLUTION COMMENDING GEORGE F. FARRIER
ON HIS YEARS OF SERVICE
AS COUNTY LIBRARIAN
WHEREAS, Mr. George F. Farrier, who has served as Librarian of the
Santa Clara County Free Library since 1959, has announced his intention to
retire from library service on May 21, 1973, thus completing thirty-one
years of devoted service in the University of California, Berkeley, Library,
as well as Head Librarian in the cities of Hayward, Alhambra, and the County
of Santa Clara; and
WHEREAS, during the fourteen years as the Librarian of Santa Clara
County's Public Library he has been responsible for the emergence of the
present County Library System serving nine incorporated cities, including
Saratoga, in addition to the unincorporated area of the County to the point
that by June 30, 1973, over three million volumes will have been circulated
during the current fiscal year; and
WHEREAS, under the forward-looking leadership of Mr. Farrier, the
County Library System has kept pace in its service to the public during the
period of unprecedented growth in the County -- a leadership which placed
highest priority in providing books for, or service to, people rather on
buildings .per. se, although as a second priority new buildings under lease-back
arrangements have been constructed, or are in the process of construction, or
planned; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure as Librarian, Mr. Farrier's leadership has been
manifested in many other ways such as: 1) transforming the library from an
institution in name only to one which has gained increased moral and financial
support from the County Board of Supervisors; 2) encouraging the formation of
local Friends of the Libraries groups to provide increased assistance and
support to the several branch libraries and giving most generously of his time
to their operations and sponsored activities; 3) persuading the several City
Councils to strengthen the County Library Service Program through the creation
of local library commissions; and 4) assuming the initiative in modernizing the
internal procedures and work flow processes within the library through the
computerization of many of its activities, thus effecting considerable re-
duction in the per unit costs; and
WHEREAS, in addition to fulfilling many of his professional responsibilities,
he has given of his time and talents without stint to many community activities
and services;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the Saratoga Library
Commission that they do hereby commend and express their gratitude to
George F. Farrier for the highly conscientious and unstinting manner in which
he has served so effectively as the Santa Clara County Librarian during the
past fourteen years, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the members of the Library Commission and
the Saratoga City Council extend to him their best wishes for every happiness
and success in the fruit{ut years which lie ahead for both him and Mrs. Farrier.
