RESOLUTION NO. 910
A RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING THE 4TH SATURDAY OF JULY AS
SARATOGA BEAR DAY
WHEREAS, during the week of July 21 through July 28, 1979,
a certain bear, variously estimated as one, two and three bears
and weighing 100, 200, and 300 pounds did attempt to make
Saratoga its home; and
WHEREAS, said bear did attempt to acquire a hillside home
in Saratoga, together with the appurtenances thereto such as
porridge bowls, chairs of various sizes and beds of diverse
firmness; and
WHEREAS, such intent to acquire and exploit the hillsides
was done at the risk of disturbing a critical habitat of that
endangered species known as mankind; and
WHEREAS, an environmental impact report was prepared for
said bear by various and sundry news media to explain the bare
facts and to offer mitigation measures, including services of
huntspersons, hounds persons and honey carriers; and
WHEREAS, said bear did eat said EIR, particularly relishing
the wildlife section; and
WHEREAS, nevertheless and inspite of some extensive and
delicious fright and terror on the parts of inhabitants, the
bear's presence was a salubrious and welcome diversion amidst
the torporous days of summer; and
WHEREAS, the bear did finally consent to relocate its
intended home outside of the urban service area and left behind
only the joy and excitement of its sojourn.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That the 4th Saturday of
each and every July henceforward, shall be set aside and honored
as "Saratoga Bear Day." being the anniversary day of that said
July 28, 1979, when said bear showed itself and was then and
there honored by Saratoga and escorted to its new home.
Said SARATOGA BEAR DAY shall be celebrated with whatever
appropriate pomp and ceremony citizens and groups of citizens,
may be inclined to devise and which may include the prominent
display of the Bear Flag of California.
