LN1TED NATIONS DAY
October 24, 1981
WHEREAS, United Nations Day is designated by the LN General Assembly
each year to ccelnenorate the founding of the Organization of October 24 1945;
WHEREAS, on this occasion, we join with the peoples of the worm in re-
affirming our ~mmitment to the principles upon which the UN was founded:
international peace and security, respect for hunan rights, and the prcmotion
of social and economic cooperation among nations. UN Day also gives us the
opportunity to examine our involvement in the world' s problems and their
solutions; and
WHEREAS, since the UN was founded 36 years ago, the world has changed
dramatically, with the addition of more than 100 nations to its membership.
In this global community, it is clear that the power to solve the world's
problens no longer lies solely in the hands of a few nations. Instead, all
nations must work together to relieve the suffering of millions, to halt
nuclear proliferation, and to prceote econcmic development; and
WHEREAS, Americans have made a great contribution to the creation and
continuing work of the United Nations. And as a part of our foreign policy,
the UN is a channel through which the US can take productive action for world
'peace and prosperity. Continued Support for the Uni~ Nations can advance
constructive goals that will benefit both the United States and the world.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT Saturday, October 24, 1981,
is desiqnated as United Nations Day and ~all citizens are urged to participate
in programs and activities designed to increase understanding of the problems
and potential of the EN and to develop ideas on ways to make the United Nations
more effective.
The above and foregoing resolution was passed and ado_pted at a regular meeting
of the City Council of Saratog~a held on the 7th day of October, 1981, by the
following vote:
