CC~CER~ING UNITED NATIONS DAY
WHEREAq, United Nations Day is designated by the UN General
Assembly each year to ~rate the rounding of the Organization on
October 24, 1945; and
WHE~, On this occasion, we join with the peoples of the
world in reaffirming our co~nitment to the principles upon ~lich the
L~ was founded: international peace and security, respect for human
rights, and the promotion of social and economic cooperation among
nations. UN Day also gives us the opportunity to examine our involve-
ment in the world's problems and their solutions; and
W~EREAS, Since the UN was founded 37 years ago, the world
has changed dramatically, with the addition of more than 10O nations
to its ~ship. In this global ecmmulity, it is clear that the
power to solve the world's problems no longer lies solely in the hands
of a few ~ations. Instead, all nations Rust work together to relieve
the suffering of millions, to halt nuclear proliferation, and to pro-
mote econceic development; and
WHEREAS, Americans have made a ~crreat contribution to the
creation and continuing work of ~he United Naticns. And as a part of
our foreign policy, the UN is a channel through which the US can take
productive action for world peace and prosperity. Continued support
for the United nations can advance constructive goals that will benefit
both the United Stetes and the wDrld.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Sunday, October 24, 1982,
is hereby proclaLmed as United Nations Day and all citizens are urged
to participate in progrems and activities designed to increase under-
standing of the problems and potential of the UN and to develop ideas
on ways to make the United Nations more effective.

The abDve and foregoing resolution was .passed and adopted at a regular
meeting of the Saratoga City Council ~n the 5th day of 0ct0ber,
by unanimous vote:
