WHEREAS, United Nations Day is designated by the UN General Assembly each
year to commemorate the founding of the Organization on October 24, 1945; and
WHEREAS, on this occasion we join with the peoples of the world in reaffirming
our connitment to the principles upon which the UN was founded: international
peace and security, respect for htxpan rights, and the promotion of social and
economic cooperation anong nations. UN Day also gives us the opportunity
to examine our involvement in the world's problems arr] their solutions;
WHEREAS, since the UN was founded 38 years ago, the world has changed dramatically,
with the ad_dition of more than 100 nations to its membership. In this global
comity, it is clear that the power to solve the world' s problems no longer
lies solely in the harris of a few nations. Instead, all nations must work
together to relieve the suffering of millions, to halt nuclear proliferation,
ara to promote economic development; and
WHEREAS, Americans have made a great contribution to the creation and continuing
work of the United Nations. APa as a part of our foreign policy, the UN
is a channel through which the US can take productive action for world peace
and prosperity. Continued support for the United Nations can advance constructive
goals that will benefit bath the United States and the world.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Monday, October 24, 1983, is hereby
proclaimed as United Nations Day and all citizens are urged to participate
in programs and activities designed to increase understanding of the problems
ar~ potential of the tIN and to develop ideas on ways to make the United
Nations more effective.
The above and foregoing resolution was passed and adopted at a regular meeting
of the Saratoga City Council on the 19th day of October, 1983, by unanimous
vote:
