CONCERNING CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY WEEK
WHEREAS, the number one came of deaths and disabilities of children in the
City of Saratoga is the autcmobile accident, and
WHEREAS, each year more than one hundred children are killed and more than
seventeen thousand are injured in car accidents in California, and
WHEREAS, one-third of all child passenger injuries result from non-crash
incidents, in which the child is thrown forward during a sudden stop, but
the vehicle is not damaged, and
WEEAS, ninety percent of these children would be alive and whole today
if they had been restrained in d~ically crash-tested car safety seats,
and
WHEREAS, less than ten percent of children ride protected by car safety
restraints, and only half of those are properly installed, and
WHEREAS, the Santa Clara County Child Passenger Safety Association has been
bringing health, safety, traffic educators, parents and volunteers together
to fight this number one cause of death and injury to children, and
WHEREAS, during the month of May the City of Saratoga will assist in the
coordination of events in Santa Clara County to inform the public that
children' s lives can be saved by the use of properly installed, approved
safety seats.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the week of May 11-18, 1984, is proclaimed
as "CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY WEFX" in Saratoga, and all advocates of child
safety are cu~,,ended for their efforts in educating Saratogans in the necessity
of protecting the children of our city while they ride in motor vehicles.
The above and foregoing resolution was passed and adopted at a regular meeting
of the Saratoga City Council held on the 2nd day of May, 1984, by the following
vote:
AYES: Councilmenhers Clevenger, Fanelli, Mallory and Mayor Moyles
NOES: None
ABSENT: Councilmember Callon
