CENCERNING THE HI6}~AY 17/VASCNA CORRIIX)R
WHEREAS, in March 1985, the Transportation 2000 Steering Ccmt~ and the
County Board of Supervisors will select for further study potential extensions
to the Guadalupe Corridor; and
WHEREAS, the traffic vole cm Highway 17 currently exceeds capacity during
peak hours and projections are fcr it'to be significantly beyond capacity
in the future; spillover traffic'is impacting local streets, and widening
Highway 17 will not by itself solve these problems; and
WHEREAS, 54,000 trips enter the Route 17 Corridor each day frcm Santa Cruz
County; and
WHEREAS, transportation ~iovements between San Jose, Campbell, and Los
Gatos could relieve the tremendous and grow/rig congestion on Highway 17,
Highway 9, WinChester Boulevard, Basccm Avenue, and parallel streets; and
WHEREAS, the Highway 17/Vascma Corridor travels through one of the most
densely populated ares in the County, and the. existing Vasc~a rail right-
of-way could provide an extremely cost-effective transit alternative that
would rec~re little additielal right-of-way acquisition and could cause
minimal disrtlotion dtufing ccms~on; and
WHEREAS, the Highway 17/Vascea Corridor could be routed via the Caltrain
Cahill Mul'tim0dal Train'.Static~, thel~ providing a connection with the
Caltrain c(xmmater service, t.he Guadalupe Corridor light rail line, and, in
the future, to BART via the Fremont-South Bay Rail' Corridor.
NOW, THERE~, BE IT RESOLVED that the Saratoga City Council believes the
Highway 17/Vasona Corridor should be one of the top two priority corridors
for the County and requests that the Transportation 2000 Steering Cc~ttee
and the Santa Clara Cotmty Board of SuperviEs select the Highway 17/Vasona
Corridor for fur~ .study as a potential transit extension.
The above and foregoing resoluticm was passed and adopted at a regular meeting
of the Saratoga City Council'held on the 20th day of FebD]e~, 1985, by the
following vote:
AYES: Councilmembers Callon, Clevenger, MDyles and Mayor Fanelli
NOES: None
ABSENT: Councilmember Hlava
