RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SARATOGA
SUPPORTING PROPOSITION ~49: NONPARTISAN ELECTIONS
WHERFAS, existing provisions of the California Constitution provide that
judicial, school, county, and city offices shall be nonpartisan; and
WHEREAS, The Supreme Court and the State of California has ruled that
neither the California Constitution nor the statutes prohibit political
parties or their central c~ittees from supporting, endorsing, or opposing
candidates for nonpartisan office; and
~, the concept of nonpartisan judicial and local elections has worked
well for more than 70 years and has made a major contribution to
California's well-deserved reputation for effective local governnent; and
WIIERFAS, judges should be elected for their good character, diligence and
objectivity and not their party affiliation; and
WHIItFAS, while political parties provide a needed function at the national
and state level, very large legislative bodies require party discipline in
decision-making, there does not exist at the local level a comparable need
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of
Saratoga does hereby sup ort Proposition #49 which will restore
nonpartisanship to local e~ctions which have historically served the
citizens in California in good steM.
The above and foregoing resolution was passed and adopted at a regular
meeting of the Saratoga City Council held on the 21st day of May, 1986, by
the following vote:
AYES: Councihnanl~rs Callon, Fanelli, Hlava, MDyles and Mmyor Clevenger
