HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Resolution 2410 RESO~I~ NO. 2410 RESOLUTI(lq OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SARATOGA WHEREAS, reading opens doors for a lifetime to employment opportunities, advancement, self-education, and the joys of reading and reading to others for pleasure, and WHEREAS, the State of California's educated, entrepreneurial, and creative tradition depends on a literate, informed citizenry, and WHEREAS, recent reports have revealed the existence of an alarming number of Californians who are not able or motivated to read, and WHEREAS, the President of the United States and individuals and organizations such as the National Commission on Reading, the Librarian of Congress, the Center for the Book, the California State Librarian, and others have focused attention on the importantce of reading and the urgent need to combat problems of illiteracy, and WHEREAS, the California Reading Initiative and the California Literacy Campaign have striven to encourage reading ~nd improve reading skills for adults and youth alike, and WHEREAS, this nation, so beholden to ideas expressed through books and the printed word, will celebrate the Bicentennial of its Constitution in 1987. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that 1987 is proclaimed as the Year of the Reader in the City of Saratoga and parents, teachers, librarians, government officials, members of the book business communities, and the people of California are encouraged to observe this year with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities aimed at restoring reading to a place of preeminence in our personal lives and the life of the City of Saratoga. Ihe above and foregoing resolution was passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the Saratoga City Council held on the lSth day of March, 1987, by the following vote: AYES: Counc~rs Anderson, Clevenger, Peterson, and Mayor Hlava NOES: None ABSENT:Counci~r F~yyles /s/Jovce Hlava Mayor ATIT, ST: IS/Grace E.
