RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SARATOGA
RECOMMENDING APPROVAL OF THE NOMINATION
TO THE NATION~ REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
OF THE JOHN 8T~INB~CK I~OUSE, GREENWOOD LANE, MONTE 8ERENO
WHEREAS, the works of Nobel laureate John Steinbeck are among the
best known and universally admired in American literature, and
WHEREAS, 1989 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of
his Pulitzer prize-winning novel, The Gr~pes of Wrath, and
WHEREAS, the 200,000 word manuscript was handwritten by Steinbeck
from May through October 1938 at his home on Greenwood Lane near
Saratoga, and
WHEREAS, the John Steinbeck House has been nominated to the
National Register of Historic Places, and will be considered by the
State Historic Heritage Commission on November 3, 1989.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Saratoga approves the nomination, and believes the John Steinbeck
House on Greenwood Lane near Saratoga deserves national recognition
as one of the most significant heritage resources, that is
connected with an author of international importance, in the County
of Santa Clara, and the State of California.
The above and foregoing resolution was passed and adopted by the
Saratoga City Council at a meeting held on the 4th day of
September, 1989, by the following vote:
