Work is normally performed under general direction. Incumbents may be assigned a helper, may periodically direct a small crew and assist in the scheduling of work and in training. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This classification is distinguished from the next lower class of Maintenance Worker II through regular responsibilities as the Irrigation Specialist and for the special skills required. It differs from the next higher class of Maintenance Leadworker in that the latter is a full, first line crew leader responsible for seeing that all daily activities are carried out in the Division. EXAMPLES OF WORK: (The duties listed below represent examples of work performed and are not all-inclusive of duties which are or may be assigned this classification.) The Irrigation Specialist position will be responsible for the following: - Maintenance and repair of all irrigation valves and sprinklers. - Minor repairs to irrigation mains and lateral lines. - Scheduling and setting of all irrigation controllers and checking and overseeing irrigation controllers during the drought conditions. - Make routine and regular water meter readings and monitor water usage. - Testing and repair of all City's backflow prevention devices. The Irrigation Specialist position performs any of the duties set forth in the class specifications for Parks and Landscape Maintenance Worker II. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: The knowledge required of a Park Maintenance Worker II augmented by that resulting from specialized study or acquired through experience, i.e., techniques, tools, equipment used in the maintenance and repairs of irrigation systems; and safe work practices. Ability to: Effectively and safely perform heavy physical labor; formulate and implement proper judgements in both normal and emergency situations; layout, install and maintain irrigation systems; direct the work of other employees; use a variety of hand and power tools and operate light motorized equipment; perform rotating work assignments; work in inclement weather; work extended or irregular hours; follow written and verbal instructions; and work effectively with other staff and with the public. Education and Experience: Completion of three years experience as a Park Maintenance Worker II for the City of Saratoga or four years of comparable experience at least two of which have been with the City. Driver's License: Possession of a valid appropriate State of California Driver's License. Certificates: Eventual certification as a State Licensed Backflow Prevention Tester.
