RESOLUTION or THE CITY COUNCIL or THE
CITY OJ' SARATOGA RECOGNIZING THE CONTRIBUTION
OJ' TBB CALIJ'OlUfIA NATIVE AKBRICANS
WHEREAS, the state of California, including the area now
occupied by the City Saratoga, had for many centuries been
inhabited by indigenous peoples whose identity in the San Francisco
Bay Area has come down to us as Costanoan and, more locally, as
Ohlone; and
WHEREAS, with the arrival of European settlers these native
peoples experienced human-caused and naturally occurring
vicissitudes such as to bring about their virtual disappearance as
a race; and
WHEREAS, these indigenous peoples lived in harmony with nature
and their environment, establishing a rich culture that has become
the subject of increasing awareness and appreciation; and
WHEREAS, in our present society we are confronted with grave
environmental issues that further enhance our awareness and
appreciation of these early peoples; and
WHEREAS, the united Nations has recognized 1993 as the
International Year for the World's Indigenous People;
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the City council of the City
of saratoga that official recognition be given to California's
native Americans during July 1, 1992 through June 30, 1993 and ask
that all Californians take this time to consider the contributions
made by these first Californians.
Passed and adopted at a regulqr meeting of the city council of
the City of Saratoga held on the 2nd day of Septembër
1992 by the following vote:
AYES: Councilmembers Burger, Kohler, Mania, Tucker and Mayor Anderson
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
ABSTAIN: None
