A RESOLUTION OF TFIE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SARATOGA DECLARING ITS
SUPPORT FOR THE VASONA CORRIDOR
WINCHESTER EXTENSION
WHEREAS, the construction of the Vasona Corridor Light Rail line has been recognized for many
years as a critical transportation project linking the residents of the West Valley with downtown
San Jose; and
WHEREAS, in November 1996 the voters of Santa Clara County approved Measure A, an advisory
measure that outlined a specific package of transportation improvements for the County; and
WHEREAS, the Measure A ballot language included the Vasona project as part of the Project
Package with the following language: "Building the Vasona Light Rail line from downtown San
Jose to the San Jose Arena/Cai Train station and on to downtown Campbell, with eventual service
to Los Gatos"; and
WHEREAS, the voters of Santa Clara County also approved Measure B, a ~% sales tax in
November 1996 for general County purposes; and
WHEREAS, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) and the County of Santa
Clara have entered into an agreement for the implementation of Measure A projects that will be
funded, in large part, by Measure B Sales Tax revenue; and
WHEREAS, both the preliminary engineering and environmental review for the Vasona Light Rail
project contemplate the construction of the Vasona line to the Winchester Boulevard Station (the
"Winchester Extension"); and
WHEREAS, the construction of the Winchester Extension as part of the first phase of construction
of the Vasona project will provide dramatically improved transit opportunities for West Valley
residents beyond that provided by a terminus in downtown Campbell.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Saratoga urges the
Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority Board of Directors to program the necessary funds
and to commit the necessary resources to implement the Vasona Corridor Winchester Extension as
part of the first phase of the Vasona Corridor project.
