I. Call To Order
Meeting called to order at 7:34 p.m.
II. Roll Call
Commissioners Present: Foscato, Manzo, Sessler, Towse
Commissioners Excused: McLaughlin
Others Present: Dolly Barnes, Lori Bums, Susan Fuller, Dave Bethel
III. Report on Posting of the Minutes
Pursuant to Government code 54954.2 the agenda was properly posted on July 16, 1998.
IV. Approval of Minutes of June 2.4, 1998 Meeting
Commissioner Sessler made a motion to approve the minutes of June 24, 1998 with minor
corrections. Commissioner Foscato seconded the motion and the motion carried. (4/0)
V. Old Business
a. Scheduling of Space Utilization Consultant's (Rohif) Final Report
Library Optimization Update - D. Barnes
Friends of the Saratoga Libraries is sponsoring Library Awareness Week October 19-25. To
honor this, City Council will proclaim October 19 - 25 as Library Awareness Week. Rohlf's
Final Report has been scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, 1998 at 7:30 p.m. in the Adult Day
Health Center. The presentation will be marketed as a part of Library Awareness Week. The
presentation will be aired by KSAR and a videotape will be available to be used in the future.
Community Librarian Dolly Barnes and Nancy Howe, Adult Department Librarian, have begun
planning library space changes, which may include implementation of some of Rohlf's
recommendations. The exhibit case may be loaned to the Book-Go-Round.
Improvement of the general ambiance of the library, including lighting and acoustics, is an
ongoing project, involving the retention of additional consultants. Baffles/banners may be used
to improve acoustics. The Rotary was named as a possible funding source for baffles/banners.
VI. New Business
a. County-wide All Commission meeting
To be scheduled for September 12, 1998 or September 19, 1998, depending on availability of
speakers.
Suggested Topics: Library Expansion - funding, recent projects, etc.; Technology; Library
Planning
Potential Speakers: Richard Hall, State Library Consultant; Eugenie Prime, Mountain View
Library Commissioner.
Possible Format: Coffee Reception, Key Note Speaker (one or two), breakout discussion, box
lunch, dismissal. L. Bums will research City budget for Library Commission expenditures.
b. Exterior Library Tour - Landscaping improvements.
Tabled until August.
VII. Reports
a. Susan Fuller, County Librarian
Suggestion: Friends of Saratoga's Libraries may be considering funding a gardener to
improve ground maintenance.
Distributed booklet to Commissioners entitled "Trustee Tool Kit for Library Leadership,
published by CA State Library, 1998 edition.
Filters for sexually explicit materials implementation eminent. - To be installed on all terminals in Children's Rooms.
- Terminals in Adult areas will have filters as a menu choice.
NT Upgrade next priority for County. Negotiations with a potential donor to replace
computers county-wide are underway.
b. Dolly Barnes, Community Librarian
Over 1,200 children have registered for the Summer Readers and Listeners Program.
c. Marcia Manzo, Library Commission Chair
No report.
d. Lori Burns, City Staff Representative
City Attorney's opinion on jurisdiction over space usage within library distributed.
New assignments for Analysts announced.
e. Janet McLaughlin, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries
No report. Absent.
f. Sally Towse, Library Foundation
No report.
VIII. Adjournment
Commissioner Foscato made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Commissioner Towse seconded
the motion. The motion carded and the meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m. (4/0)
