Present: Commissioners Landsness, Voester, Chairman McArthur
Absent: Commissioner Heid
Minutes
Several corrections to the minutes of March 23, 1983, were
suggested by Commissioner Voester. These corrections were
agreed to by the rest of the commissioners. The reading of
the minutes was waived and the minutes approved unanimously.
I. WORK SESSION ON COUNTY INVENTORY
Mrs. Marie Gaspar was present at the meeting and spoke
briefly on the Hincks estate which the Commission had questions
on. She indicated that she was not sure of its present con-
dition, but she knew that the main structure does not look
like it did formerly. She also stated she might be able to
find some family photographs of the site.
The Commission then finalized the corrections to the
County's Heritage Inventory which were discussed at the pre-
vious meeting. The nomination notification letter proposed
by Staff was modified to have a response deadline of May 23
and a request for a photograph by the respondent. The owners
of the following properties were to be sent the modified
nominating letter with a mail-in response sheet:
1. St. John's Episcopal Church, 14700 Sixth Street
(No. 11)
2. Resubmit: Crowell House, 19855 Douglass Lane
(No. 56)

3. Add barn at 20640 Third Street, (No. 26) to
Sam Cloud House 14501 iBig Basin way (No. 25)

Mrs. Gaspar owns this property and indicated that
a letter need not be sent. She also stated that
she would prepare a d~scription of the property
using information she researched at the San Jose
Mercury Newspaper. She briefly related several
anecdotes regarding Mr. Masson and the hunting
lodge.
9. Old Grandview Ranch (Pike Estate), 14684 Pike Road
(NQ. 7)
10. (Hayfield), 14315 Douglass Lane (No. 57) - The
Commission wanted to check with Commissioner Heid
to determine if it would be appropriate to contact
the property owner. Commissioner Voester volunteered
to find out.
11. Niven Estate (Di Manto), terminus of Madrone Hill
Road. Staff s~ggested this item be nominated and
also suggested that Mr. John DiManto, the present
owner of the property, be contacted.
12. San Tomas Grammar School, 14004 Quito Road (No. 72)
The Commission requested that Staff determine if there was any
information on file on No. 74 (12239 Titus Avenue). The
Commission also wanted to investigate the ranch house near
Quito and Pollard Roads to determine if it should be added to
the list. Discussion turned to why some of the items listed
in Saratoga were deleted from the County Inventory. Were
these structures still there? Commissioner Landsness and
Chairman McArthur decided to visit sites Number 1, 62, 63 and
72.

Item No. 66 on the City inventory is to be deleted since it
is not within the dity limits of Saratoga. Chairman McArthur
indicated she would investigate No. 73 (Nippon Mura Inn).
Staff suggested that a house on Peach Hill Road mentioned in
the Saratoga News advertising section be investigated.
Chairman McArthur mentioned talking with the City's Volunteer
Coordinator about using volunteers for the Commission's work.
She indicated that before the next meeting on May 25, 1983,
each Commissioner ishould look at the iiterat~re they have and begin
to determine a list of things to be accomplished and deadlines.
Commissioner Landsness mentioned that there should be a centraliged
clearinghouse for historic and rehabilitation information. She
suggested that such an information center could be located in
the Library and that this section could be dedicated to the
memory of Rowan "Rob" Robinson, Jr., since he was instrumental
in getting the Heritage Preservation Commission started. Com-
missioner Landsness stated she would follow up with the Library
Commission on this.
The Commission then decided that at their next meeting they
would:
1. Deal with the responses to the County Inventory
nomination letters.
2. Set up a goal completion calendar.
3. Discuss idea of a Heritage Resource Clearing-
house.
4. Report on the Heritage Preservation meeting
in Sacramento.
Mrs. Gaspar offered to do the title searches for the properties
to be nominated to ensure that the correct addresses are used.
She will report the results to Staff.
