HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION
MINUTES

ROLL CALL
Present: Commissioners Cameron, Heid, Henderson, Kvamme, Voester, and
Chairman Landsness
Absent: Commissioner McArthur
MINUTES
After adopting corrections suggested by Commissioner Heid the Commission
waived the reading of the minutes of the meeting of November 7, 1984 and
approved the minutes unanimously with Commissioners Henderson and Voester
abstaining since they did not attend that meeting.
I. OLD BUSINESS
A. Village Master Plan - Recommend Committee Member
Commissioner Heid nominated Commissioner Cameron to be the Commission's
representative to the Village Plan Committee to be created by the mayor.
Commissioner Cameron declined the nomination. Staff described the contents
of the proposed City Council resolution forming the Committee. General
discussion then followed on past Village Plan documents and the boundaries
of the Village.
Commissioner Voester nominated Chairman Landsness to be the Commission
representative with Commissioner Cameron as the alternate. Commissioner
Heid seconded the motion which passed unanimously.
B. Corrections to City Historic Survey
The Commission began its review of the survey on item #7 where it
had left off from its meeting of October 24, 1984.
#7 - No changes. The Commission expressed its desire to meet Dr.
Head. Commissioner Heid indicated he would try to set up a
meeting in January.
#8 - Correct original owner's name to Mrs. Oliver Charles Stine.
Change the word "bought" in fourth line to "brought.

~9 - The Commission decided to delete the term "standing" and only
indicate that the building is one of Saratoga's oldest homes.
910 - Indicate that the land was purchased from Hannah McCarty. Dis-
cussion then followed on using the name McCarty throughout the
survey.
911 - Correct to read that services were held in the church for 23
years. Indicate that the structure has been greatly changed
by remodeling.
~14- Vested owner is Jennifer Taylor. Discussion then followed on
what the architectural style of the building was.
~15 - Indicate parsonage was built in 1886. Chairman Landsness stated
that the name of the new owners had to be determined. Commission-
er Heid indicated that the style of the structures should be
labled California Pioneer.
~16 - Commissioner Heid indicated that the structure is a Queen Anne
Cottage style. The Commission decided to keep the name of
Missionary Settlement House but change its date to 1896. In-
dicate that Clarence George built and lived in the house before
he sold it to the church in 1905. Original use was for a residence.
Used for a short period of time as a missionary house.
#18 - Name should be Pettis Livery Stable built in 1898. The present
owner is Fitzsimmons.
#19 - Need to check who current owners are. Indicate that the T. E.
- Marsh family is one of Saratoga's earliest families which bought
the property from Mrs. Hannah McCarty. Mrs. McCarty and her
daughter built the house after Mr. Marsh died.
#22 - Change date to 1895. One of the early owners was Mrs. Grover
whose son Harry was born there.
#24 & 25 - Photographs should be reversed. The Commission decided to treat
both buildings as one unit leaving inventory #24 blank. The
store was built in 1884 by John Hutchinson who also built the
Hutchinson Building at 14495 Big Basin Way. Samuel Cloud came
to Saratoga for his health in 1893 and bought the store. He
added 15' to the rear of the building. His wife and daughter
Laura came out in 1895. Laura married Tom Smith who took over
the building in 1907 when Mr. Cloud died. Indicate that the
house was built in 1895 (925).
926 - Change name to indicate it was a warehouse and stable.
#27 - Now owned by Pearl Smith's heirs. Built in 1884.
II. ADOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned at 5:30 p.m.
