I. OLD BUSINESS
8. Home Tour Discussion With California History Center
It was noted that only some of the people in Saratoga have received
their invitatZons. Commissioner Koepernik stated that he had received
responses from all but two wineries he contacted. The donations so
far total 18 cases, He estimates that they will get a total of 28
oases. Commissioner Koepernik asked about the donation letters for
%he wine. Chairperson tandsness stated that Commissioner Koepernik
should write the letters. It was decided that the wine would be iced
on the day of the event. Chairperson Landsness noted that coffee
would be donated by International Coffee Co. and they will do a coffee
grinding demonstration. There was discussion on how the lemonade
would be made. Chairperson LandsheSS noted that she would get Buy and
Save to donate lemonade. 0ommzssioner goesten stated that if they
would have to buy the lemonade, she would suggest that larger cans of
instant lemonade be purchased. Chairperson LandsheSS stated that
someone should be appointed to take care of the nitpicking details.
It was noted that water would be at the different homes on the tour
and the dispensers would be rented from 81hambra. Discussion followed
on what would be looked for at the time of the fire department
inspections. There was agreement that large flower pots should be
used, filled with sand, for extinguishing cigarettes, Chairperson
Landsness noted that her large flower pots could be used, Janet of
California History Center stated that she needs a list of people who
have received complimentary tickets. Mary Jane of the History Center

asked for volunteers to be in the publicity photo~. She noted when
the photos would be taken. Chairperson Landsness stated that perhaps
the mayor should be in the pictures. On the insurance, Janet from the
History Center said that she was going through the district first and
that she would know more tomorrow, Chairperson Landsness stated that
some reserve officers will be hired. Helen from the History Center
will be contacted to find out about hiring the security guards for the
homes on the tour. Also, she will be amked to find out about
renting tables, table cloths, etc. Betsy from the History Center said
that they will be able to set up the refreshments in the laundry room
at Villa Decdora. Commissioner Koepernik volunteered his claw foot
bathtub for the ice. There was agreement that wash tubs would be
easier to use. Helen from the History Center was volunteered to take
care of the ice. Commissioner Voester stated she talked to John
Schwartz of VITA about the tour. The building will be opened on the
day of the tour, Betsy of the History Center suggested contacting
UITA to see if they would volunteer to dress in cOStUMe the day of the
tour. Commissioner Bielinski has gotten the La Trattoria Restaurant
to donate bread. Chairperson Landshess will ask Gene's Hark et for
crackers. Marlclaire will donate some croissants. Large garbage
bags will be used to keep the bread fresh. If it rains the
day of the event, refreshments could be served in the great hall at
the Peck's. The Bregman's garage is another alternative. Janet from
the History Center is to bring the signs that were used last year at
the next meeting. Staff is to write a letter to Callrams to advise
them that temporary signs will be used along Big Basin Way that day.
Meeting was scheduled for April 18 at 3:30 p.m. for last Minute
things. h details Meeting is scheduled for April 2 at 3:J0 p.m.
Commissioner Voester noted that Volunteer Voice of Saratoga mentions
the tour and that volunteers are needed. There was concensus that
Janet of the History Center should get the insurance with a limit of
$1,000. I? the insurance cost is over that then they would shop
around. Mary Jane of the History Center estimated that 117 volunteers
are needed for the tour, She stated that she will schedule the fire
inspections. There will be a table for the Heritage Commission and the
History Center at Villa Deodor~ and at the Musuem. Janet from the
History Center is to bring in the blank evaluation forms from test
year. It was noted that there might have to be a sign outside the
Chamber of Commerce to let people know where the tickets are being
sold. Commissioner goester noted that next year they may want to
consider group rates for the tickets. Janet from the History Center'
said that the florists frOM last year could be counted on again to
provide the flowers.
II. OTHER BUSINESS
The Commission reviewed the request to remove an oak, tree from the
rear yard at 14672 Oak Street. The house, known as the William King
House, has been designated as a historic landmark. There was
concensus that the decision on the need to remove the tree should be
],eft to the City Horticulturist, but if the tree had to be removed it
should be replaced with another oak, preferably a California Live Oak.

There was some discussion on the u~e of Bed and Breakfast
establishments as a Means to save historic structures. Staff noted
that this use is ~ conditional use in the commercial districts but was
not permitted io residential districts, The Commission decided that a
Memo be directed to the Planning ConMission to suggest that they
consider allowing bed and breakfast uses for homes in residential
areas that have been designated as historic landmarks.
Staff noted that thm City Council had asked the Commission to Make a
recommendation on the request by Pat Putcat! to have a plaque on the
building which was donated to the 6ity by her father-in-law. Statf
has contacted Ms, Purcell who will be sending a letter on her
request. 815o, the Commission is to consider if there are other
buildings where this might be appropriate. The Commission will
discuss ~e item when the Zet~er fro~ Ms. Purcelt is received.
