PLACE: Saratoga Community Library
TYPE: Regular Meeting
I. Routfne Orqanization
A. Roll Call
Present: Ansnes, Davis, Koepernick, Peck
Absent: Benzing, Cameron, Mitchell
Staff: Walgren
B. Approval of Minutes of 11/15/89
M/S Peck/Koepernick to approve the minutes of 11/15/89 with a
correction to an item under oral communications regarding a
possible heritage resource video documentary. Motion passed
unanimously.
C. Posting of Agenda
Pursuant to Government Code 54954.2, the agenda was posted at
City Hall on 11/29/89.
D. Oral and Written Communications
Davis questioned whether or not the Saratoga Cleaners on Big
Basin Way would have to be demolished due to earthquake
damage. This Heritage Resource building is one of Saratoga's
oldest structures and is said to be constructed of stones
from the Saratoga Creek. If demolition is being considered,
the commission would like to be notified.
Davis shared with the commission the news of George Novako-
vich passing away. The commission fondly remembered Mr.
Novakovich, whose ranch was a Saratoga Heritage Resource.
Peck brought up the subject of the Santa Clara County history
book which had been left with the planning department to be
re-bound. Staff was aware of the book and agreed to have the
work done.
Ansnes passed around a copy of the Los Angeles Historic
Inventory book as a reference for the commission's own herit-
age book, which is in the works. The document was a simple
paper back type and depicted only a small number of buildings
in Los Angeles which were deemed to be the most significant.
II. Old Business
A. Future Use of Warner Hutton House
The commission reviewed examples of typical Community Center
functions from the Recreation Department's Fall 1989 catalog.
Davis felt that the adult oriented courses, such as culinary
arts, home arts, and leisure education, were much more in
keeping with the Warner Hutton home's architecture and style
than the day care and teen facilities which are currently
being considered.
Peck and Ansnes suggested public meeting rooms to attract
adult oriented uses. Koepernick felt that the City staff
could also benefit from having an additional conference room
for study sessions and other semi-public and private meet-
ings.
Chair Artshes agreed to draft a letter to Harry Peacock, the
City Manager, and to Joan Pisano, the Community Center Direc-
tor, addressing this issue.
B. Letter From "American Bungalow"
The commission desired to know more about the function of the
"American Bungalow" newsletter and directed staff to look
into Valerie Young's past association with this publication.
C. Heritage Council of Santa Clara County
This item was accepted and staff agreed to pursue the neces-
sary steps to join.
III.Items Initiated by the Com~ission
Commissioner Davis was impressed with the Northern Arizona
University pilot program to teach courses in the preservation
of the natural and built environment. Staff agreed to con-
tact the National Trust's Western Regional Office, the spon-
sor of the program, to find out more about it.
V. Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 4:45 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
mes Walgren~
