DESCRIPTION

7b. Briefly describe the present physical appearance of the site or
structure and describe any major alterations from its original
condition:
This is a two -story wood frame farmhouse with a front gable, wooden
shingle roof with a moderate pitch. A plain boxed cornice with narrow
overhanging eaves that partly extend around the front corners is
the main decorative feature of the house. The bargeboard is
highlighted by an appliqued sunburst ornamentation at the peak of the
gable. The house is clad in wide horizontal lap siding. A later
addition is the wrap- around covered porch that extends across the front
and west side of the house. The porch is open across the front and
screened along the west side. At the rear of the house a large screen
porch has been added. The windows appear to be the original double
hung with decorative shutters.

SIGNIFICANCE

events, and persons associated with the site).

This pioneer cottage is located in an area known in early Saratoga as
"Poverty Flat." It was built in the late 1800's probably by James
Randolph Stamper. James' brother, Elbert, was married to Clara Cox,
the eldest daughter of orchardist and early Saratoga settler John Cox.
They had three children Arthur, Evelyn and Donald. Jim Stamper was a
single man, and he left the property to his nephew, Donald, in the
early 1930's. The Stampers were an early pioneer family in Saratoga.
Elbert, who had come from Kentucky, was the village constable for
twenty -three years. This farmhouse, which is surrounded by orchards,
is still in the Stamper family.
