This Pioneer style farmhouse is well preserved because it has had many
additions over the years. The original structure was probably a simple
rectangle of two stories. The siding is horizontal lap with simple
flat window frames surrounding modern casement and barn sash. The
front door and Colonial pediment above has been added. The original
two -story residence was remodeled in the 1960's with extensive one -
story additions to the right side and to the rear in the New England
salt -box style. Little of the original design and shape of the house
is now visible.

William Freeman King was one of two brothers who came to Saratoga from
New York looking for a site to construct a paper mill. They
established the Saratoga Paper Mill in 1869. The King brothers became
prominent members of the community and William built this residence in
1877. William King served as Postmaster in 1870 and, being an eloquent
public speaker, often took part in community activities and
celebrations. His dreams and aspirations were shattered in April 1883
when the mill burned. William and his family remained in Saratoga, but
the shock affected his health. His wife, Mary, opened a boarding house
to assist with the family needs. In 1897 King became paralyzed and
died two years later. His two daughters moved away from Saratoga;
however his wife remained until she died in February 1915 at the age of
79 years.

NORTH
A gesture toward a treasured past
By Sharon D. Landsness
APRIL 17 THE Saratoga City
Council approved the designation of
the William King House as a Heri-
tage Landmark.
This designation is unique in that
it is the first such designation of a
private residence. The house itself,
built in 1870 by the co-founder of the
Saratoga Paper Mill (now gone),
William King, is one of Saratoga's
older and better preserved historic
homes. Its pioneer farmhouse style
has been altered somewhat from the
original with the more recent addi-
tion of American Colonial motif over
the front door. It has also had exten-
sive additions onto the rear of the
structure for more liveable space.
None of these changes have served
to harm the basic simplicity and
character of the original home.
The Saratoga Heritage Preserva-
tion Commission wants to extend its
thanks to Ms. Jennifer Young Tay-
lor, the present owner of the, home,
for her totally enthusiastic coopera-
tion in the processing of this designa-
tion. We are hoping that with each
landmark designation that comes
our way, other owners of heritage
homes and buildings in Saratoga will
be encouraged to follow suit. This
cooperation between .the Heritage
Commission and the property
owners is absolutely necessary for
the preservation of Saratoga's his-
tonic buildings.
Perhaps, this Landmark
Designation is a sign of growing pub-
lic confidence in this commission's
ability to deal with its responsibi-
lities in a sensitive and co- operative
manner, providing a helping hand in
matters of mutual concern.
Sbaron D. Landsness is chairwoman
of the Saratoga Heritage Preserva-
tion Commission.

B. Comore n t • The William King Residence is an important heritage
resource for our community because the original structure, built in
approximately 1870, represents a period of Saratoga history when
early structures were simple in design and represented the pioneer
atmosphere of the community. The original redwood structure, though
modified and added to in recent years, is still intact and has the
Two -story Pioneer style clearly defined. The original owner, who was
one of the founders and owners of the Paper Mill, was an important
and prominent member of the community, thus giving an added quality
to this resource.

C. Findings: 1. The William King Residence exemplifies and
reflects special elements of the architectural history of
Saratoga in that it is one of the oldest existant residences
in Saratoga representing the pioneer atmosphere and simple
design characteristic of the 1870's.
2. The residence is identified with William King
one of the founders and owners of the Paper Pill who was
an important and prominent member of the community.
3. The residence embodies the distinctive
characteristics of the Two -Story Pioneer stvle and conforms
with the simple design parameters of that era.
