The Saratoga Historical Museum was dedicated on July 4, 1976. Built in 1904 on Lumber Street
(now known as Big Basin Way), near the junction of the Sunnyvale Road, the building served at
various times as a drug store, a grocery, a restaurant, and as a notions store. The Swanee Dress
Shop occupied the building from 1950 until it was moved to its present location in 1975 to the
Saratoga Historical Park at the corner of Saratoga -Los Gatos Road and Oak Street.
Its renovation and conversion to a museum was a community effort. Seed money came from the
endowment fund of the late Florence Cunningham (1880- 1965), a long -time collector and recorder of
Saratoga history.
The museum is a wooden clapboard false -front commercial building (see photo) of approximately
1180 square feet, located on a lot with frontage of approximately 124 feet, lot depth approximately
280 feet, lot area approximately eight tenths of an acre. The building is rectangular in shape with a
small shed addition to the side and rear, which was completed in 2004.
Two large single pane front doors are centered on the front side, forming a recessed porch. Flat
glass panels accentuate each side of the doors. The front porch is reached by brick steps with
wooden handrails. There is a fixed glass transom over the front door. The building is adjacent to a
small Pioneer -style building known as the McWilliams House. A brick walkway joins the two buildings
with the parking area.

Saratoga, Santa Clara County, California

The nominated structure (the Saratoga Historical Museum, formerly the Swanee Dress Shop) is
significant within the theme of California community development (or California agriculture) for two
reasons. First, it is one of the original structures contributing to the nomination of the entire early
California community of Saratoga as California Historic Landmark No. 435 in 1950. Second, the
Swanee Dress Shop is one of four heritage structures that are currently owned by the City of
Saratoga and represent the extraordinary efforts of Saratoga residents to preserve their heritage
despite limited financial resources. Saratoga residents preserved several threatened structures in an
appropriate and sensitive manner years before the Secretary of the Interior guidelines were available
to provide direction. These structures continue to provide local residents with insight into community
life in early California. The nominated structures were all relocated as close as possible to their
original sites and were placed on a site within their original context.
The Swanee Dress Shop was a commercial structure in the business district from its construction
about 1904 until 1975 when a development project forced its relocation. It was always an important
business, contributing to the commercial vitality of Saratoga's main street. The Swanee Dress Shop
(now the Saratoga Historical Museum) is significant within the context of an early California town.
Although the structure has been relocated, the City of Saratoga exercised great diligence to move this
historic to an appropriate site. In addition, great care was taken to place the structure within its
original context. The Swanee Dress Shop was located within the traditional boundaries of Saratoga
Village. The building was moved to its present location in the Saratoga Historical Park and formally
dedicated in its new role as the Saratoga Historical Museum on July 4, 1976.
History of Saratoga
The City of Saratoga is one of the oldest American settlements in California, dating to 1848. First
settled as an enclave serving a water - powered grist mill, the village provided the entrance to a toll
road over the Santa Cruz Mountains to the ocean. The Village was first formally surveyed in 1852
and named McCarthysville.
Over the decades and through several name changes, Saratoga has retained a strong sense of her
historic importance and identity. Saratoga residents made significant and formal efforts to protect
their early heritage, beginning with the formation of a history group through Chautauqua in the 1890's.
When the Foothill Club, a woman's study group was founded in 1907, a history section attracted
many interested participants.
When legislation was first passed to nominate significant California landmarks, Saratoga residents
nominated their entire town and Saratoga was designated as landmark #435, the only remaining
major entity remaining from this early process. Many of California's bronze landmark markers note
"the former site of... "; Saratoga however, remains vibrant and vital.

The Swanee Dress shop is significant because it is typical of the early single -story false -front
commercial buildings that once lined both sides of Big Basin Way. Although several other false -front
structures from the era remain in situ on Big Basin, the City of Saratoga and the Saratoga Historical
Foundation, a nonprofit group, worked together to protect this building when it had to be moved. The
citizens of Saratoga understood the importance of this modest structure. Dated to 1904, this
commercial structure is typical of similar buildings that have been dated to 1870. This early structure
was assembled with square nails.
The nominated structure is a typical example of its structural type and style, and embodies the
characteristics that identify it as an early California building. The structure retains its integrity and is
immediately recognizable as an interesting and historic building.
The Anza exploring party passed through the Saratoga area
on March 25, 1776. Lumbering in the mountains which began
in 1847 and continued for many years brought the area's first
settlers in 1850. Among other industries established were a lime
quarry (1850s), grist mill (1854), tannery (1863), paper mill (1868)
and pasteboard mill (1870). Pacific Congress Springs was a
popular resort from 1866 to 1942. Farmers here pioneered the
fruit industry and held Blossom Festivals beginning in 1900 after
the end of a drought.
Saratoga is situated at the entrance of a historic pass to the redwood - forested Santa Cruz Mountains.
In 1776, Captain Juan Bautista de Anza commissioned by Spain to establish an overland route frorn
Mexico to Alta, California, passed through the area. In 1846 a Mexican land grant deeded the
Saratoga - Campbell - Cupertino area to early settlers.
The combination of a pleasant climate and beautiful terrain has always made Saratoga an especially
desirable place to live. The heart of Saratoga Village is the site of one of the earliest known
Muwekma Ohlone encampments. The Muwekma Ohlone are a branch of the native American
Costanoan people who lived in Santa Clara Valley at the time of the first contacts with Europeans.
(Allen: 2002) The Saratoga site is known as archeological site SC 1 -65, and the site is estimated to
be 6450 years old. (Fitzgerald: 1991) Although much of the Saratoga community was considered to
be part of the Quito Rancho under Mexican rule, permanent settlement did not occur until the
appearance of the Americans in 1847.
Saratoga was the site of the first successful local saw mill in the West Valley, one of the earliest in the
state, built by William Campbell in 1847. He soon added grist stones to also grind flour. First known
as Campbell's Gap, then Tollgate, McCarthysville and later Bank Mills, the tiny town was first formally
surveyed and platted by Daniel McCarthy in 1852. The present name of Saratoga was chosen by its
residents in 1865. (Cunningham: 1967)

At the time, lack of roads made it difficult to get the lumber transported. An Irishman, Martin McCarty,
solved the problem after he leased the mill from Campbell. He obtained a franchise from the Court of
Sessions to build a toll road from the mill down to the small settlements at the mouth of the canyon.
A tollgate was then erected at the location four-horse teamtl The village, which eloped at this site, B a teI was

When Santa Clara County was formed, the county took over the road and eliminated the tolls.
Tollgate was later renamed McCartysville when the enterprising McCarty laid out plots for
development on both sides of Lumber Street, now known as Big Basin Way.
Other mills were also established at this time along Saratoga Creek — a paper mill near 6 1 Street and
Big Basin Way and a flourmill located near the present -day Hakone Gardens. These milling activities
briefly gave the village the name of Bank Mills.

In the latter part of the 1800s, the area's fertile soil and available land saw the emergence of another
industry — agriculture. The new village of Saratoga grew slowly. Town lots 25' by 100' sold for $10 to
$50. Farmland sold for a mere $5 to $40 per acre as the open spaces of wild wheat and poppies
gave way to vineyards and orchards.
Apricots, cherries, and French prunes were particularly well suited to Saratoga's soil and climate.
The 680 -acre Glen Una Ranch, located between Saratoga and Los Gatos, was the world's largest
producer of prunes. Also, the internationally famous Sorosis Farm on Saratoga Avenue shipped its
dried fruit worldwide. Another one of the early ranches, Garrod Ranch, is still in operation as a riding
stable and vineyard.
It was during the late 1880s that the sunny hillsides were found to be conducive to viticulture, and
many wineries were established. In 1890, Saratoga became the home of the world - renowned Paul
Masson Winery, now known as the Mountain Winery. The French immigrant, Masson, brought grape
cuttings from his native land to plant on the hillsides along Pierce Road. He was convinced that the
rich California soil could produce grapes for champagnes comparable to those of France.

The early 1900s found Saratoga developing into a pleasant village as it became the trading center for
the surrounding fruit growing farms. The mountain setting and mild climate also made Saratoga a
popular resort area. Lodges and Inns thrived; including the mineral springs vacation resort above the
village (first called Pacific Congress Springs, now named Saratoga Springs).
During the 1900s, Saratoga developed an enviable reputation as a highly desirable place to live and
became a haven for wealthy San Franciscans who came to build elegant hillside homes overlooking
the lush valley. Some of the more significant examples of these structures include the palatial
Mediterranean -style home of U.S. Senator James Phelan. His Villa Montalvo (19'12) is now a center
for the cultural arts. In 1916, San Francisco art patrons Oliver and Isabel Stine purchased 16 acres
above the village as summer retreat for family and friends. Mrs. Stine's admiration for the gardens
she visited while on a trip to Japan inspired the development of this property into what subsequently
became Hakone Gardens (1918). Hakone is considered to be one of the most beautiful and
authentic Japanese gardens in the United States.
After WWII, the character of Saratoga changed forever from agricultural to suburban. As space
technology and the defense and electronics industries were established in nearby communities,
Saratoga's open land soon became more valuable for homes for the rapidly growing population than
it was for fruit orchards.
When legislation was passed in 1949 to nominate significant California landmarks, Saratoga
residents nominated their entire town for the California Register as State Historic Landmark 435.
In 1956, to protect the community from industrial development, the citizens voted to become the City
of Saratoga.
From our very beginnings as a community, Saratoga's citizens have taken an active role in preserving
essential elements of our heritage, both natural and man -made. National Register Landmark status

EXTERIOR. The structure is a modest single -story frame residence in the
style known as a New England saltbox. It has a gable roof that slopes sharply
to the rear. Reportedly built of local redwood, the house is painted white
with black window trim. The house is clad in redwood siding in the clapboard
style, typical of houses of that time.
The house is of single wall construction, built without studs. It is most
likely that the wood was milled locally; the County's first sawmill, established
around 1848, was located less than a quarter mile from the building's
original site. The interior walls reveal the boards were cut with a band saw.
A porch on the front runs the entire width of the house. Porch supports
are simple posts without decorative detailing. The front door is centered in
the facade. The front door appears to be original to the house with original
hardware . mounted on the surface rather than mortised into the door. The
upper portion of the front entry door is glazed.
There are two windows in the facade, equidistant from the front door.
The two front windows are not original and are movable sash windows, one
over one. Two original windows are on the north side of the structure with
pin sash and six over six window panes. It is likely that this style of window
also graced the front at one time.
The left side of the house has a small (six feet wide) addition toward the
rear. This addition was built to house an addition'to the kitchen and a
bathroom. It is clad in channel rustic siding and contains a small hinged
window with six panes. This addition shows on the Sanborn Fire Insurance
maps from 1915.
There is a fireplace and chimney on the south side of the property. It
was rebuilt when the structure was relocated in 1976 and placed on a
concrete foundation. The chimney was rebuilt using the original brick from
the house.
The rear of the house features a small porch that was rebuilt after the
house was moved. Sanborn maps from 1915 show a small porch and shed
attached to the rear of the house; both were removed. The current porch at
the rear does not match the footprint from the early Sanborn maps.

INTERIOR.
The interior of the house has been modified to create an office space.
Portions of two interior walls have been removed, creating a two room
structure. The original house was a four room home. The wallpaper and
other decorative surface materials have been removed to reveal the
redwood planks that make up the interior walls.. Flooring is Douglas. fir.
The fireplace has been rebuilt but the mantel is original and of simple
design, made of wood.

Significance - Jarboe - McWilliams House
The Jaboe - McWilliams House is associated with community life in early
Saratoga and is architecturally unique to Santa Clara County and the State
of California. The house has been documented to 1864.
Built circa 1852, the Jarboe - McWilliams House is an excellent example of a
vernacular single -wall residence, built of local redwood by a local family. The
house retains most of its original fabric. It is the only structure of its kind
within Santa Clara County and serves as a remarkable example of early
American building craftsmanship.
It is identified with persons and events significant in local history. Henry
Jarboe, Saratoga's first blacksmith, built the structure. Jarboe sold the
house to James McWilliams, Saratoga's second blacksmith, in 1864.
It is assumed that Henry Jarboe built the cottage as his first home in the
early 1850's. The description of the property in the deed from Jarboe to
McWilliams shows the cottage already in existence. "The house now occupied
by said party of the second part" (see copy of deed attached). Although
records show McWilliams began operation of the blacksmith business in late
1864, the deed to the property is dated Oct. 5, 1865. Perhaps McWilliams
leased the blacksmith shop first.
The nominated structure is significant within the theme of California
community development for several reasons.
> It is one of the original structures contributing to the nomination of the
entire early California community of Saratoga as California Historic
Landmark No. 435 in 1950.
> It is one of four heritage structures owned by the City of Saratoga and
represents the extraordinary efforts of Saratoga residents to preserve
their heritage despite limited financial resources.

The family of the town's blacksmith occupied the Jarboe - McWilliams House
until 1900. It remained in continuous use as a residence until 1975 when a
construction project required its relocation or demolition. Concerned
citizens raised the funds necessary to save the house.
Although the structure has been relocated, the City of Saratoga exercised
great diligence to move this historic house to an appropriate site within the
traditional boundaries of Saratoga Village.
The new site was dedicated as a city park on July 4, 1976 as part of
Saratoga's observance of the U.S. bicentennial.
The nominated structure is a typical example of its type and style, and
embodies the characteristics that identify it as an early California building.
The structure retains its integrity and is immediately recognizable as an
interesting and historic building.
HISTORY
The City of Saratoga is one of the oldest American settlements in
California, dating to 1848. First. settled as an enclave serving a water -
powered gristmill, the village provided the entrance to a toll road over the
Santa Cruz Mountains to the ocean. Saratoga was the site of the first
successful saw mill in the West Valley, one of the earliest in the state, built
by William Campbell in 1847. The tiny town, first called Campbell's Gap, was
formally surveyed and platted by Daniel McCarty in 1852 and renamed.
McCartysville. The town was also called Tollgate and Bank Mills. The present
name of Saratoga was chosen by its residents in 1865 because of the
similarity in the mineral content of the water at the mineral springs above
the village. to that at Congress Springs at Saratoga, New York.
Saratoga has retained 'a strong sense of her historic importance and
Identity. Saratoga residents made significant and formal . efforts to protect
their early heritage, beginning with the formation of a history group through
Chautauqua in the 1890's. When the Foothill Club, a woman's study group was
founded in 1907, a history section attracted many interested participants.

When legislation was first passed in 1949 to nominate significant California
landmarks, Saratoga residents nominated their City. As a result, in 1950
the entire town was placed on the California Register as landmark No. 435.
Saratoga is the only major entity remaining from this early process. Many of
California's bronze landmark markers note "the former site of
Saratoga however, remains vibrant and vital.

CRITERION A - Exploration and Settlement
Henry Jarboe and his family came from Texas by ox team to Saratoga in
1852 and acquired some 52 acres of land extending approximately from the
junction of the present Saratoga Avenue and the Saratoga - Sunnyvale Road
to what was planned as Second Street in the village, as laid out by Marten
McCarty Later, because of title trouble due to the claim of the Rancho
Quito owners, he had to buy his property from Arguello. The deed
dated August 4, 1862 shows Jarboe's holdings as 52 37/100 acres all on the
west side of Lumber Street (Big Basin Way) and south of Saratoga - Sunnyvale
Road, including the parcel on which he established his blacksmith shop. (Copy
of deed attached).
After selling the property, Jarboe built and lived in the house known as "Rose
Hill ", a lovely cottage on the hill just beyond to the south of the blacksmith
shop and yard. Later (early `70's or possibly late '60's) Jarboe built a new
home on his property across the creek on what is Brookwood Lane which still
exists as a private residence. After Jarboe moved to his new home, the
McWilliams family moved into the Rose Hill cottage. Mrs. Jarboe had
established a garden which was further enhanced. by Mrs. McWilliams. The
garden became widely known for its beauty.
James McWilliams was born in Scotland in 1836. He emigrated to the United
States as a youth and lived for some years in Illinois. McWilliams first came
to California in 1859 following service with the army expedition sent by
President Buchanan against the Mormons in 1847 -48.
He returned to Illinois where on September 6, 1863 he married Martha H,ollen
of Kane County, Illinois. In 1864 the couple moved to McCartysville (later
Saratoga) where he bought the blacksmith shop and related businesses
(wagon and carriage shop, etc.) on Lumber Street (later Big Basin Way) from
Henry Jarboe. The cottage was located close by and to the south of the
present Pacific Valley Bank. The price paid was $500.

Addendum: Additional Information on Jarboe and McWilliams
Henry Jarboe was a native of Kentucky; his wife Mary was born in South
Carolina. The Jarboe Family consisting of Henry, Mary, two daughters, ages
one and four, and two sons of Mary's by her previous marriage to a Mr.
Ingram (sometimes spelled Ingraham) who was killed at the Alamo.
Jarboe became engaged in many early endeavors in Saratoga. In 1853 he
provided a site for Saratoga's first school, a subscription school held in a
modest shack. This school was replaced by a public school in the same area.
Henry Jarboe was on the first school board and continued to serve when the
first permanent public school was established in the multi - purpose Sons of
Temperance Hall in 1854.
He was a partner in a lime kiln operation near the end of Bohlman Road. This
was possibly the first kiln in Santa Clara County. Lime had become a valuable
product in the 1850's, being used in construction of early brick buildings
including the early college structures in Santa Clara.
Lumber remained a number one necessity in the area; and always more was
needed. In 1863 Jarboe was part of a scouting group formed to explore the
possibilities of a land route connecting Santa Clara Valley with the remote
virgin forests on the Santa Cruz side of the summit. The results of the
group's findings led to the organization of the Saratoga Pescadero Turnpike
company and the Charles Maclay Toll Road. In November of that same year,
when the Madronia Cemetery Association was formed, Jarboe was chosen to
be one of the six trustees.
Jarboe gained a different kind of notoriety during the Civil War. Feelings ran
high in McCartysville and the townspeople were split between North and
South. In 1864 an Ingraham related to Mary Jarboe's first husband arrived
in McCartysville to recruit men for a Confederate group to help raise money
for the Confederacy. Henry Jarboe, along with a group fellow Confederate
sympathizers, became implicated in plotting a stage holdup in the Sierras.
While Jarboe and others were not active participants in the robbery, they had
been involved in the plotting aspects and were tried for treason. After a

series of mistrials, they were released for lack of evidence. It is believed
that this incident brought so much shame to the residents of McCartysville,
that the name change to Bank Mills occurred shortly thereafter.
Mrs. Jarboe was born June 15, 1820 in North Carolina. Her first marriage
was to Ingraham. She lived a number of years in Texas with with her second
husband, Henry Jarboe moved to Saratoga. Her children were Travis
Ingraham, John Ingraham, Charles Jarboe and George Jarboe who remained in
Saratoga. The two daughters were Mrs. Frankie Mesamer who also remained
in Saratoga and Mrs. W. T. Clevenger .
McWilliams continued to operate the blacksmith shop until his death from a
heart attack on August 27, 1900 almost a year after Mrs. McWilliams' death
in October, 1899. In his more than thirty -five years in early Saratoga he
played an active role in community life, serving both as school trustee and on
the cemetery board of trustees. As evidence of his business acumen, he
was frequently called on for property appraisals. He was also a leader in
religious and church affairs and took an important part in the building of the
Christian Church in 1880.
Five daughters were born to the McWilliams: Bertha who became a school
teacher and lived in San Francisco and married a Mr. White. Belle married
Walter Curtner, member of a prominent Warm Springs family. The Curtner's
daughter, Lydia Belle Curtner married Walter Crider, well known Los Gatos
merchant and lived thereafter in Los Gatos. Clara lived all her life in
Saratoga where she died in 1942. Martha (Mattie) married Laurence Smith,
Saratoga orchardist, and had one son, Ormond Smith who died in the 1960's.
She and her sister Clara both lived in the Williams subdivision on the east side
of Saratoga - Sunnyvale Road, opposite Marion Avenue. The youngest
daughter, Frances (Fanny) attended business college and worked in an office
for some years. She married Stephen F. Williams, a highly successful
Saratoga orchardist and land developer for who Williams Avenue is named.
Williams died in 1942 and Fanny died June 14 1958.
The pioneer couple and their five daughters rest in Madronia Cemetery in
Saratoga.

Saratoga begins rescue of its history
Landmarks
chosen as
resources
The city's Heritage Commis-
sion recently designated three
well-known landmarks in the
Village as "heritage resources,"
Protecting them from demoh-
Lion and "assuring their archi-
tectural integrity will be
saved," according to a commis-
sion spokeswoman. This brings
the total number of sites or
buildings so designated to six
since the commission was
formed in 1976.
The Saratoga Historical
Museum; the McWilliams
House, today used by the Cham-
ber of Commerce; and the Sara-
toga Village Library, all located
on Saratoga -Los Gatos Road
near Oak Street, were desig-
nated as resources on Oct. 16.
The museum and Chamber
buildings are relocated historic
structures, moved to their
current locations after the city
purchased the property as part
of a block grant in 1975.
"Local leaders such as
Charlie Robbins and Kebil
Smith worked to have a histori-
cal park established, and the
buildings moved to the site, in
time for the 1976 bicentennial,"
according to a written an-
nouncement released by the
commission.
The Saratoga Historical
Museum is one of the oldest

The Chamber of Commerce
building, also once located on
Big Basin Way, dates from the
1B50s and was the residence for
the town's second blacksmith
James McWilliams.
Original construction of the
Village library dates from 1927
when local residents, led by
Sheldon Patterson, worked to
have it built at its present loca-
tion. Its architecture reflects the
then - popular mission - revival
use of terra cotta and tile and
select plantings of deodora
cedars, cypress, redwoods and
oak.
In August, the commission
also designated 13.9 acres of
land near City Hall on Fruitvale
Avenue as another heritage
resource.
"As one of the last remaining
orchards in the city, the acreage
will be preserved as open
space," Commissioner Barbara
Voester said.
Voester said the commission
is encouraging residents to
request the city to designate
private residences as land-
marks. To date, only one such
residence has given the designa-
tion, the pioneer -style house at
14672 Oak St., built in the 19th
century by William King.
Voester pointed out that such
designated buildings receive tax
benefits and use of the historic
building code.

Nowadays hardly any community has a cannon, but
there was a time long ago when no town worth its salt,
would think of starting a Fourth of July celebration
without a cannon salute at sunrise.
McCartysville (now Saratoga) was such a town, and
its folks were, real proud of their Little cast iron can-
non, built at the Pomeroy & McKenzie foundry in San
Jose.
In fact, it was said that McCartysville hardly ever
went anywhere for pleasure without its cannon. It was —
as welcome as a keg of beer at parades and other
social functions, and considered added insurance
against the "enemy„ at at least one gathering.
This latter circumstance was the so- called "settlers'
war " -. of 1861, culmination of longstanding disputes _
over titles to Mexican land grant properties. -
The settlers on Yerba Buena rancho at Evergreen
made 'a "stand" in a field at what is now Quimby and
White roads, and Otis Blabon and other McCartysville
citizens showed up with the cannon. Although no shot
was fired, the weapon loaded with scrap iron greatly
added fo the show of strength which ran largely to axes
and pitchforks.
Once Bill York and George Cross, a couple of leading
McCartysville citizens, took the cannon on a•goose hunt
near Gilroy. A newspaper article written years ago by
.William McCarty, son of Martin, for whom McCartys-
ville was named, says it was fired at night and the
hunters had to wait until morning to count all the geese
knocked down by the blast.
In another article jn possession of Mrs. Melita Oden, _
Saratoga historian, this same writer says the end of the
cannon came when it was blown. up, a piece of flying -
metal narrowly missing him. = PL =

Already in Utah in 1859, soldier bop
James McWilliams likely figured he
might as well swing up over the Rock-
ies and have a look at California before
going home to Illinois.
So he did, traveling around, checking
Into some of the mining camps and
Inspecting some of the farms of settlers
who had come before him, and he decid-
ed the Santa Clara Valley would be a
nice place to live.
McWilliams went home, got himself a
wife, and hot - footed it to McCartysville
(Saratoga) where he bought the only
blacksmith shop, one established by
Henry Jarboe in the early 1850s. He
paid 8500 for the anvil, bellows, kegs of
horseshoe nails and wagons and other
stock.
It was late In the Civil War that the
McWilliams came, probably about the
time of the Union flag raising celebra-
tion Oct. 5, 1864, at which the name of
the town was changed to Saratoga.
James MCWtlllams, born In Scotland
In 1836, grew up In Illinois and along
about 1857 joined the Army sent to
Utah to keep peace among the Indians,
Mormons and U.S. government officials. .
Out In Saratoga, McWilliams either
bought or built the little four -room red-
wood cottage on Lumber street (now
Big Basin way), which today Is one of
the city's oldest residences.
The little hou. a will acquired by the
Saratoga Historical Foundation, re-
stored and moved arnond the corner
next to the Village Library on the Sara.

Fourth of July ceremonies dedicating
the cottage as an historical museum
will be held Friday. Everybody Is invit-
ed to the 11 a.m. program, which will
feature speeches, band music and a can-
non salute, much as in the old days
when the Fourth was one of Saratoga's
big celebrations.
James and Martha McWilliams were
active In the community, "pillars of the
Christian Church ", and James served as
school trustee and was on the board of
the Madronla Cemetery association.
Mrs. McWilliams' garden was one of the
little village's showplaces.
The couple raised five daughters:
Bertha, a school teacher who married
N.E. White amd lived in San Francisco;
Belle, wife of Walter Curtner, eldest son
of Warm Springs pioneer Henry Curt-
ner, Clara, who never married and who
lived all her life In Saratoga; Mattip,

ers were Williams, the Smiths, Hamil-

Saratoga begins rescue of its history
Landmarks
chosen as
resources
The city's Heritage Commis-
sion recently designated three
well-known landmarks in the
Village as "heritage resources,"
protecting them from demoli-
tion and "assuring their archi-
tectural integrity will be
saved," according to a commis-
sion spokeswoman. This brings
the total number of sites or
buildings so designated to six
since the commission was
formed in 1976.
The Saratoga Historical
Museum; the McWilliams
House, today used by the Cham-
ber of Commerce; and the Sara-
toga Village Library, all located
on Saratoga -Los Gatos Road
near Oak Street, were desig-
nated as resources on Oct. 16.
The museum and Chamber
buildings are relocated historic
structures, moved to their
current locations after the city
purchased the property as part
of a block grant in 1975.
"Local leaders such as
Charlie Robbins and Kebil
Smith worked to have a histori-
cal park established, and the
buildings moved to the site, in
time for the 1976 bicentennial,"
according to a written an-
nouncement released by the
commission.
The Saratoga Historical
Museum is one of the oldest
false -front commercial build-
ings remaining in the village.
From 1905 to 1910, the building
housed the Saratoga Drug Store
and was located where the
Pacific Valley Bank stands
today, on Big Basin Way near
Saratoga - Sunnyvale Road.

B . Comments: This structure is an excellent example of California
Pioneer style of architecture with three rooms under a main ridge with
front porch full width and lean -to additions. It is constructed of
single wall redwood members (1 "x12 ") with plates at top and bottom.
Cheese cloth was attached to interior surface to support wallpaper and
bungalow siding (1 "x6 ") was applied horizontally at the exterior. Sash
are double hung and mantel is the original. After being moved to the
Historical Park site in 1975 many interested and prominent citizens,
restored the structures, removing wallpaper to expose wood interior walls,
paint and varnish to expose original pine flooring, and generally ref
grbishing the building. It was dedicated as part of the Historical Park
during the bicentennial celebration on July 4, 1976, and is considered
as one of the heritage resources of the City of Saratoga,

B. Comments: This structure is an excellent example of California
Pioneer style of architecture with three rooms under a main ridge with
front porch full width and lean- to.additions. It is constructed of
single wall redwood members (1 "x12 ") with plates at top and bottom.
Cheese cloth was attached to interior surface to support wallpaper and
bungalow siding (1 "x6 ') was applied horizontally at the exterior. Sash
are double hung.and mantel is the original. After being moved to the'
Historical Park site in 1975 many interested and prominent citizens
restored the structures, removing wallpaper to expose wood interior walls,
paint and varnish to expose original pine flooring, and generally ref
erbishing the building. it'was dedicated as part of the Historical Park
during-the bicentennial celebration on July 4, 1976, and is considered
as one of the heritage resources of the City of Saratoga.
