HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-14-2014 Parks & Recreation Commission Minutes City of Saratoga Parks and Recreation Commission Regular Meeting MINUTES DATE: Tuesday, January 14, 2014 TIME: 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. LOCATION: Administrative Conference Room 13777 Fruitvale Avenue Saratoga, CA 95070 Call to Order Roll Call 6:39 P.M. Present: Ping Li, Renee Paquier, Rick Pearce Absent: Cheryl Bailey, Terry Ward Staff Present: Mainini Cabute Report on Posting of the Agenda: Pursuant to Government Code Section 54954.2, this meeting was properly posted on January 9, 2014. Oral & Written Communication: Any member of the public may address the Commission about any matter not on the agenda for this meeting for up three minutes. Commissioners may not comment on the matter, but may choose to place the topic on a future agenda. Approval of Draft Parks and Recreation Commission (PRC) Minutes: - November 12, 2013 Special Meeting - Paquier motion to move minutes - Pearce gave 2nd motion - 3-0 Paquier, Pearce and Li approved Old Business: - Commissioner Paquier moved to discuss item #2 before item #1. 1. Let’s Walk Saratoga! Issue: At its November 12, 2013 meeting, the commissioners discussed and volunteered for specific assignments. Commissioner Bailey and Commissioner Li have volunteered to coordinate the activities for Let’s Walk Saratoga. In past years, the PRC coordinated 3 walks per year and focused on different trails in Saratoga. Guided tours have been given at Joe’s Trail, Villa Montalvo, and Fremont Older. At the Joint Meeting with Council in September 2013, Council Member Miller expressed an interest in conducting more tours of the Saratoga Quarry via the PRC Let’s Walk Program. Action: Select dates and discuss the planning and implementation of the events. - Commissioner Li stated that she would like to host guided walks once a month. - Parks trails will include the Saratoga Quarry Park, Montalvo, and Joe’s Trail. - Commissioner Li asked staff to communicate with Council Member Howard about his availability. 2. Outdoor Summer Movie Nights- Issue: At its November 12, 2013 meeting, the commissioners discussed and volunteered for specific assignments. Commissioners Paquier, Pearce, and Ward volunteered to coordinate the Summer Movie Night series. In past years prior to 2013, The PRC hosted one outdoor movie per year that took place in September at Wildwood Park. In 2013, as a result of Council direction, the PRC piloted a 3-outdoor movie series at El Quito Park. The movie series attracted approximately 150 movies at each event and Commissioner Paquier obtained donations from Gene’s Market, Starbucks, and Action Day Care. Action: Select dates and discuss the planning and implementation of the events. - Commissioners discussed event times and made decision to host events on the third Friday of every month beginning in June. The event dates are June 20th, July 18th, and August 15th. - Commissioners also discussed that the June 20th movie should be targeted to an older group of kids due to the lateness of the time of the event as a result of the solar solstice. - Commissioners directed staff to ask the Youth Commission to select movies for the events using the list of available movies provided by Swank Motion Pictures. - Commissioners discussed assignments and marketing to include flyers for social network, banners, Facebook, and Nextdoor. Li Wildwood, Foothill – o Wildwood Park Bbq pit, top is gone, just pole, there’s a cone Paquier El Quito, Gardner- o Bathroom doors are heavy- door resistance and bathrooms seem unclean and unmaintained. Pearce Bell Grove, Congress Springs, Ravenwood o Congress Springs Park-Two rail wooden fence, bottom rail missing, Ravenwood water fountain did not work, graffiti on table, wear and tear on a few.
