Old Business:
1. Let’s Walk Saratoga!
Issue: Since 2012, the Parks and Recreation Commission has led 3 guided park tours in Saratoga. The
Guided tours have been given at Joe’s Trail, Villa Montalvo, and Fremont Older. At the Joint Meeting
with Council in September 2013, Council Member Miller expressed an interest in conducting more tours
of the Saratoga Quarry via the PRC Let’s Walk Program. At the January 14, 2014 Parks and Recreation
Commission meeting, Commissioner Li expressed interest in conducting a guided walk on the first
Saturday of every month. Council Member Miller volunteered to help guide the first few walks at the
Saratoga Quarry Park. Commissioner Li has guided several walks at the Quarry and will report on
positives and challenges.
Action: Discuss and plan details of future guided walk events.
- Commissioner Li gave Let’s Walk events summary. July had 20 people show up and August had 2 people.
- City staff will find out if volunteer work is feasible for scouts, environmental organizations, West Valley
Parks Management Department students, and other clubs.
2. Outdoor Summer Movie Nights Summary
Issue: The Parks and Recreation Commission has successfully completed its annual outdoor movie night
series that were held on the third Friday of each month on July, July and August. There were various
sponsors of the event. Starbucks provided coffee, Roku provided hot chocolate, Rose Donuts provided
donut holes, Gene’s market provided a meat platter, Primary Plus provided popcorn and Dottie the
Clown provided balloon entertainment. For the July and August events, Roku donated a total of $2400
to pay for the movie equipment rental and movie licensing. Commissioners should discuss the positives
and any challenges of the three movie nights.
Action: Discuss future events.
- Pearce gave summary. Frozen had 400, Avengers had 250 and Despicable Me had 350.
- PRC believes that the City should maintain 3 movie night events.
- Commissioners discussed future movie night events and stated that PRC should encourage people to
bring their own cups and plates, to clean up after themselves and that food servers should follow food
serving sanitation protocol.
- Commissioners also discussed enhancing kids entertainment at future events.
New Business
3. Nesting Box Project
Issue: In early 2011, the PRC and Audubon Society worked together to place nesting boxes in the City’s
parks and open spaces for Saratoga cavity nesting birds and train volunteers to monitor the
boxes. In 2013, the City worked with West Valley Parks Management Department to clean out
the nesting boxes.
Action: Discuss whether the PRC would like to continue the nesting box project and someone take the
lead on the project.
- Commissioner Paquier communicated to Chris Cruz from West Valley Parks Management
Department about whether they are interested in doing nesting boxes. Commission Li and
Sharma would like to co-team for this event.
4. Daffodil Planting Project
Issue: At the May 2011 meeting, the PRC discussed a daffodil bulb planting project that took place in
Kevin Moran Park and decided to discuss the possibility of coordinating a daffodil bulb planting
at a future meeting. The project was further discussed at the September and November
meetings. At the November meeting, a subcommittee was formed to lead the daffodil planting.
Action: Discuss whether the PRC would like to pursue the daffodil planting project and someone take
the lead on the project.
- Commissioners believe that this could be a project postponed for the future when the drought is over.
Maybe revisit next year.
5. Reschedule or cancel November 11th meeting due to Veteran’s Day holiday.
Issue: The November Parks and Recreation Commission regular meeting is currently scheduled for
November 11, 2014, which is Veteran’s Day, a City of Saratoga observed holiday. The
Commission may choose to reschedule or cancel the November meeting.
Action: Vote to reschedule or cancel the November 11, 2014 meeting.
-Commissioners agreed to reschedule the meeting to November 12th, 2014 at 6:30 p.m.
