Library Closure on August 3 and August 4
All SCCLD libraries will be closed on Wednesday, August 3 and Thursday, August 4, reopening on Friday,
August 5. The closures are to allow staff to complete both technical and building upgrades.
Rosetta Stone online now available free to SCCLD members
Learn a new language, free, at the Santa Clara County Library District’s website, www.sccl.org. Rosetta
Stone is an online service available in the library and from home using one’s free library card. Access
Rosetta Stone at www.sccl.org, in the Online Learning section. Lessons on thirty languages are
offered. Languages include English, Chinese (Mandarin), French, Hindi, Japanese, and Spanish. Learn
new languages for travel, business, school, or other purposes. Rosetta Stone Library Solution offers an
interactive approach, using an immersion method. Courses are structured around core lessons that
build reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Use a microphone to compare pronunciation with
that of a native speaker. Learn proper word articulation and cadence. Refine grammar, vocabulary,
and writing skills using illustrative images, quizzes, and challenges. Lessons progress from basic to
complex. Added last month, Rosetta Stone is the newest addition to the Virtual Library.
Summer Reading Update
SCCLD increased Summer Reading participation by 25%
over 2015 with the Read for the Win program. Libraries
provided creative programming, reading
recommendations and enthusiastic support for
continued learning for over 24,000 people of all ages
with hundreds of programs throughout June and July.
Summer can often be a time that students lose important academic skills. Read for the Win offered
opportunities for kids and teens to keep reading and learning over vacation. Research shows that
reading over the summer prevents reading loss and, most importantly, voluntary reading helps students
become better readers, writers and spellers. And this year’s program also included free performances,
games and chances to create. Families earned the chance to visit the Children’s Discovery Museum and
kids of all ages received free books. It truly was a winning summer in so many ways.

Saratoga Library: Art on Display in July and August
55” Exhibit
Coordinated by Librarian Betsy White and Volunteer Bonnie Stone.
Artwork is on display in the library lobby for community members to enjoy.
“Break out the parkas at Saratoga Library. Saratoga, California has a new exhibition that will
transport visitors to the Antarctic to see glaciers, penguins and more.
Through the abstract paintings of Jennifer Koney and the lens of photographer Oliver Klink, the
exhibit explores the concept of sea level rise, how this happens and what it looks like.
Klink takes the viewer along on an expedition through the Antarctic and shows wildlife in its
natural habitat and the stunning beauty of ice and the melting giants that are glacie rs.
Koney exhibits her series of tall paintings, all with a 55 inch horizon line which make the 55
inches of sea rise tangible in a visceral way.
The two eco-conscience artists have come together to collaborate in the conception of a
traveling exhibition in which the two illustrate the serious concern of ice and snow melt and sea
level rise in an ominous and dramatic yet stunning manner.
Scientists state the projected sea level rise for the San Francisco Bay-Estuary by the year 2100 is
55”. Koney and Klink aim to educate and inspire change through t heir paintings and
photographs.”

Congratulations Durga!
The Saratoga Library is losing one of our best
team members, Durga Jandhyala. She has
gotten a well-deserved promotion to Senior
Clerk at the Los Altos Library. She has been a
phenomenal employee here at Saratoga.
Hard working, conscientious, and extremely
knowledgeable, she has been a pleasure to
work with. Her gracious manner and great
customer service both internally and with
our patrons has helped to make our library
environment an extremely positive one. We
wish her all the best in her new job and new
home.
- Andy Cammisa
Welcome Cherie!
Saratoga Library is pleased to have Cherie Wheeler join our team as a coded page. Some
years ago (I won’t say how many) Cherie worked here at Saratoga. A lot has changed since
then, but Cherie is a quick learner and a hard worker. She is very dedicated and self-
motivated which is necessary as a coded library page. Cherie is also articulate, polite, and has
a nice laugh so we are looking forward to training her to work as a clerk when needed. I truly
believe this is the start to a long and harmonious career with the library. We expect great
things from Cherie and we are so happy to have her back after all this time.

Council entered into an agreement with Our City Forest to
establish a matching tree planting program. For $100, residents
can share half the cost of having Our City Forest expertly plant a
tree in their front yard. Additionally, Our City Forest will provide
