Agenda Items for Next Meeting – June 27, 2017 - West Valley College Collaboration & Next Steps - Library Commission Support for Library Goals Adjournment Vice Chair Burley adjourned the meeting at 8:41 p.m. Minutes respectfully submitted: Crystal Bothelio, City Clerk/Asst. to the City Manager City of Saratoga June 2017 Commission Report Nancy Howe, County Librarian Summer Reading Reading by Design, the 2017 summer reading and learning program, kicked off June 1 st at all SCCLD libraries. Promoting the love of reading, creativity and scientific discovery, Reading by Design encourages everyone to discover their creative side as they incorporate reading into their lives. Reading is succeeding for all ages, and most especially for young people who need to keep reading skills sharp. Research shows that by reading at least 5 books, students can avoid the learning loss known as the “summer slide” and start school in the fall ready to learn. Sign up online or at the library for Reading by Design, then complete new activities and read 5 books. Adults and Teens get a tote for signing up, and kids who read at least 5 books this summer receive a free museum pass to either the Discovery Museum (ages 1-9) or The Tech Museum (ages 10-12) and a book prize! Libraries will also feature bi-weekly drawings for cool prizes like movie tickets or treat coupons. SCCLD is partnering with VTA as well so look out for the summer message at VTA stations and on vehicles. In 2016, almost 24,000 adults, teens and kid s participated in summer reading – a 25% increase over the last year. Reading by Design offers hundreds of events throughout the county to engage even more of our residents in summer reading success. Lunch at the Library This summer SCCLD will be hosting Lunch at the Library programs in 3 locations in South County to serve the children in our county when they need it most. Summer is a time when many supports are missing for youth. Without the academics, free lunch and opportunities to play outside that students get throughout the school year, many of our youth lose important skills. SCCLD libraries want to support children and their families is a safe and positive environment. This year, in addition to our excellent summer reading program Reading by Design that promotes reading and literacy for all ages, Gilroy and Morgan Hill Libraries and our Bookmobile service in collaboration with the San Martin Lion’s Club will have Lunch at the Library programs all summer. SCCLD is partnering with YMCA to provide a free lunch and educational activities for children ages 0-18. These positive differences in children’s summer learning experiences during their elementary school years can ultimately impact whether they earn a high school diploma and continue to college. SCCLD Bookmobile in partnership with the San Martin Lion’s Club San Martin Lion’s Club 12415 Murphy Avenue, San Martin Tuesdays and Thursdays June 20 – August 10, 2017 10:30am – 12:30pm Morgan Hill Library Monday through Saturday June 12 - August 16, 2017 12:00pm - 1:00pm Gilroy Library Monday through Friday June 19 – July 28, 2017 12:30pm - 1:30pm Leading with Technology at Your Library In March 2017, SCCLD’s eight libraries began installing 500 new computers, replacing slower, less powerful full-service and catalog computers. Featuring faster processors, larger screens and equipped with Blu-ray disc players, the new computer systems offer some of the most popular software available and provide three different browsers instead of one. With this massive computer upgrade, the Library created a superior user experience worthy of Silicon Valley. We provide a state-of-the-art experience for students who rely on free library computer sessions as well as to engineers who don’t have home access to such a variety of software. Applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Animate (for creative design) are among the more than 20 new software packages now available. Patrons can also utilize Microsoft Visual Studio (for programming), WinWay Resume Deluxe, Ultimate Phonics (adult literacy educational lessons), and Camtasia (for creating online tutorials and videos) for free. From photography projects, filmmaking, and software programming to creating animations, designing websites and more, the opportunity to learn, build or develop innovative creations has never been greater. Three-hour free Adobe Photoshop training classes will be offered at all library locations. The classes will be taught by Master Adobe Instructor Josh Samos who won his first photography contest at age 11. He has been teaching photoshop for two decades. Online registration is being offered through our website. Charging Stations For your convenience the Library now offers courtesy charging stations at each library location. Keep your mobile devices charged at all time. A power strip and charging station all in one, these charging stations feature six interchangeable retractable ca bles, two USB ports and two international AC wall outlets. These universal multi-device charging station work with any Apple, Android, Samsung, Blackberry and thousands of other devices. May 2017 Commission Report Nancy Howe, County Librarian Reading by Design 2017 Get ready to be inspired! The 2017 SCCLD Summer Reading program Reading by Design kicks off June 1st. There is something for everyone with programs and resources at the library that explore the creativity of everyone who makes our world a more interesting, livable, accessible, and beautiful place. Reading is succeeding in so many ways - students who read over the summer keep skills sharp while teens can find greater understanding and adults develop critical thinking skills and enhanced vocabulary. Reading by Design challenges everyone to read at least 5 books this summer. Adults and teens get a free tote for signing up and kids earn a free museum pass. This summer SCCLD will also be using PLA outcome surveys at several of our events to learn more about how the community benefits from programs at the library. The Public Library Association has developed key points and questions to help identify what is working best for our patrons. SCCLD is partnering with VTA, The Tech Museum and The Children’s Discovery Museum. Stay tuned for more information on all the exciting events happening this summer at the library. Market Segmentation: Library Outreach The Library District wants to see every life in your community transformed by learning and culture through the power of the library. To reach persons not currently benefitting from library service, the Library District completed a market segmentation study in 2016 to develop a deeper understanding about who we serve and what they value. Based on what we have learned, the Library has developed outreach plans that we hope will increase the library’s relevance and value. Part of these plans will be a renewed focus on outreach service where we hope to connect with non-library users and let them know about what library service matches their needs. Our Service Plans, which will be presented to commissions in May and June will aim to reach new audiences. Mobile Circ In order to facilitate outreach efforts, each library has received two mobile circ kits that include an iPad, Bluetooth scanner, and Bluetooth printer. The iPad has a library app that allows staff to quickly and easily issue library cards and check out library materials outside the library walls. Hopefully, you’ll see your local library staff out and about at events in your community equipped with their mobile circ kits. Virtual Reality Experience Project at Morgan Hill Library We’re pleased to announce that we were awarded the Virtual Reality Experience Project grant made available by the California State Library with the support of Facebook/Oculus. We will pilot this innovative project at Morgan Hill Library before rolling it out to the remaining library locations within our district. This project will provide patrons that are not familiar with this new immersive technology a chance to get first-hand experience with virtual reality and related educational programs. 1 SARATOGA LIBRARY REPORT May 2017 Mike Eitner, Community Librarian STATISTICS March 2016 March 2017 April 2016 April 2017 Total Circulation 90,905 93,011 92,387 92,328 Adult/Teen Circulation 48,917 48,293 49,470 47,880 Children’s Circulation 41,988 44,718 42,917 44,448 Use of E-Book Collection (OverDrive Vendor) 2,401 2,228 2,399 Use of Downloadable Audio Books (OverDrive Vendor) 1,122 873 1,232 Total Number of Programs 87 77 73 62 Programs Total Attendance 2,342 2,902 2,099 2,415 New Library Cards Issued 261 213 239 198 Gate Count: Library Use 35,394 36,814 35,051 33,770 Outreach Events 4 3 5 2 Outreach Total Attendance 141 376 298 139 Volunteer Hours 1,378 1,458 1,516 1,503 SUMMER READING June 1-July 31, 2017 Summer Reading begins June 1, 2017, and is for all ages. Through SVCE, energy customers will have the option to buy energy that is 100% carbon free. Additionally, customers can select between energy sourced from 50% renewable energy and 100% renewable energy. Enrollment in Saratoga will be complete in July 2017. SVCE is a non-profit public agency that works in partnership with PG&E. SVCE buys clean electricity direct from the source – encouraging the kind of market growth and competition that results in more renewable energy sources and lower energy generation rates. PG&E delivers the electricity over existing power lines, and continues to maintain the lines and provide customer service as they always have. Bills will continue to come from PG&E, with SVCE generation charges replacing those from PG&E.
