Eclipse!
Get ready for a spectacular astronomical event! On
Monday, August 21 a total eclipse of the sun will be visible
in the continental United States for the first time in almost
40 years. Here in Santa Clara County, we will experience a
76% darkening of the sun. SCCLD with the cooperation of
NASA Ames, has planned an exciting slate of programs and
activities to help the public understand and appreciate what
will happen, and how to view it safely. Free eclipse viewing
glasses will be given away at each location while supplies
last. For a full list of activities visit www.sccl.org/eclipse.
New Digital Services
Striving to continually meet the needs of our diverse community, SCCLD has added two new
international digital collections to our online virtual library. The first is Odilo which offers hundreds of
quality Spanish language eBooks including bestsellers, old favorites, romances, mysteries, biographies,
cookbooks and eBooks for kids of all ages. The second is HyRead. HyRead offers hundreds of traditional
Chinese language ebooks, eMagazines and even multimedia enhanced eBooks. This offering is unique as
very few public libraries in the U.S. offer quality Spanish language eBooks or traditional Chinese versus
simplified Chinese language eBooks to their patrons.
SCCLD Receives Funding for ESL Classes
The County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors approved three year funding of $150,000 to support the
Library’s ESL classes. This funding will allow us to continue free classes and to expand the number of
classes offered without the conditions of the new reporting requirements. Starting in August, SCCLD is
offering free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at the Gilroy and Milpitas Libraries. These
classes will meet two nights each week through mid-December. The goal of the classes is to help
participants improve their English skills in speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing and listening.
Each of our library locations also offer ESL Conversation Clubs. These informal sessions are designed for
adults over 18 years of age who speak and understand basic English. We focus on developing English
speaking and listening skills in a comfortable, casual setting. These drop in programs are free, and no
registration is required.
In addition, as the result of a California state grant, SCCLD will offer a Citizenship series starting in
September at Saratoga Library. The classes will be held on Wednesday mornings, 10:30am, on
September 6, 13, 20, 27, and October 4 and 11. Citizenship information displays are currently located at
each library location. The ESL and Citizenship classes continue to build on the library’s role as a
welcoming and trusted information source within our communities.

and is an avid hiker. There was an extremely competitive national recruitment and we received over 100

and the private sector, JPA members, and staff. I am grateful to all of those who participated in the
process.

the SCCLD Foundation. We will enjoy hors d’oeuvres, music and a talk by Dale Dougherty, founder of

and ways libraries can spark future innovators in our communities. The Foundation was founded to raise
private funds in support of innovation in library services, the Bookmobile and Reading Program. The
